背比べ（Comparing Heights）

 さて、今日は五月五日「子供の日」に因んだ歌を紹 介します。
「背比べ」です。

  柱の きずは一昨年の五月五 日の背比べ
粽食べ食べ兄さんが計っ てくれた背の丈
昨日比べりゃなんのことやっと羽織の紐の丈
 
この歌は海野厚さんによって作られました。

海野さんは五月五日の「こどもの日」には、いつも弟の背 丈を計ってやりました。弟は兄さんに背丈を 計ってもらうのを楽し みにしていました。
海野さんは大 学生として東京へ行っ てからも、子供の日に は故郷に帰りました。
ある年海 野さんは病気のため、故郷に帰ることができず、弟を悲しませました。
その時海 野さんが弟の気持ち になって作ったのがこの歌だと言わ れています。

昨日(きのう)比(く ら)べりゃなんのことやっと羽織(はおり)の紐(ひも)の丈(た け)
 
この歌(うた)は海 野(うんの)厚(あ つし)さんによって作られました。
海野(うんの)さんは五 月(ごがつ)五日(い つか)の「こどもの日」には、いつも弟(おとうと)の背 丈(せたけ)を計(は か)ってやりました。弟(おとうと)は兄(に い)さんに背丈(せたけ)を 計ってもらうのを楽(たの)し みにしていました。
海野(うんの)さんは大 学生(だいがくせい)として東京(と うきょう)へ行(い)っ てからも、子供(こども)の日(ひ)に は故郷(くに)に帰(か え)りました。
ある年(とし)海 野(うんの)さんは病気(びょ うき)のため、故郷(くに)に帰(か え)ることができず、弟(おとうと)を悲(か な)しませました。
その時(とき)海 野(うんの)さんが弟(お とうと)の気持(きも)ち になって作(つく)ったのがこの歌(う た)だと言(い)わ れています。

Well, today being May 5th (Children's Day), I would like to introduce a song associated with the day: Comparing Heights. The song was written by Atsushi Unno.

Hashira-no-kizu wa ototoshi-no gogatsu itsuka-no sei-kurabe
Chimaki tabe tabe niisan ga hakatte kureta sei-no take
Kinoo kuraberya nan-no koto yatto haori-no himo-no-take

The mark on the pole is your height from May 5, the year before last
Your big brother—always gobbling down chimaki rice cakes—measured it for you
Compare it to yesterday's and look at how you've grown!

On the fifth of May (Children's Day) Unno-san would always measure his younger brother's height. His younger brother would look forward to this chance to have his height measured by his older brother. Even when he went to Tokyo for university, Unno-san would always return to his hometown for Children's Day.

One year however, Unno-san was ill and could not return to his hometown. His younger brother was really disappointed. The story goes that at this time, Unno-san imagined his brother's feelings and composed this song.
