Beachcombing

Beachcombing

Do you know what beachcombing is ?
Beachcombing is the hobby of picking up and collecting objects that have washed in with the tide. It involves walking along the shore, making a collection of any things of interest that are found, researching where they originally came from, making decorations or objects with them : there are various ways of doing it, depending on the person. There are shells and coral to be found of course , as well as driftwood and pieces of glass or rock that have taken on strange shapes as they rolled around in the oceans ; there are a host of treasures to be found on the beachline with mysterious countries of origin.

Its not only about picking up interesting objects, it also involves cleaning up the beaches by picking up garbage as well ; in some local areas there are cleaning events tied in with beachcombing.

In September in Japan, this is the season of typhoons. When you take a look at the beaches after a typhoon has gone past... there are various objects to be found lying around. How about going and looking for your very own piece of treasure ?

Sakura season is here !

The cherry blossom (sakura) season is starting from now in Japan.
From March through to May, each area turns the color of sakura pink as the season works its way up from the south all the way to Hokkaido.

TV shows and daily news programs are jostling with special Sakura bloom reports which state, "Today, the cherry blossoms in such and such place have begun to bloom".

The famous cherry blossoms viewing sites are bustling with tourists. And parties are held here and there by people on their way home from work or on their days off under the pretext of "Cherry blossom viewing".

People getting excited as they say,"The cherry blossoms have begun to bloom !" or as they say, with some regret, "The cherry blossom petals have begun to fall !"...during this season gives one a sense of how typically Japanese they are indeed.

I, however, like to view the cherry blossoms in my neighborhood. I enjoy finding cherry blossoms along routes that I usually walk along, in the parks and near the school, and realize that, "Oh, there were cherry blossom trees here all along too".

Looking out of the window of the bus or train, when riding my bicycle, or when I'm on my way to the shops...I can enjoy the cherry blossom blooms in familiar places.

I feel that these are my own personal 'famous' cherry blossom viewing sites. And I hope to find some again this year.
