Green Curtains in Japan's summer

Starting from Okinawa all the way up to Tohoku, the different areas of Japan are currently in the middle of the Tsuyu season. The Tsuyu is the long rains season. In an average year it starts from the beginning of June and ends in the middle of July. When the rainy season is over, next comes a tropics-like heatwave. And especially in urban towns which are surrounded by asphalt and concrete, the temperature is difficult to bring down. This is where the latest fad of Midori no Kaaten (Green Curtains) comes in. It is made by growing creepers on the side of walls or by the window and creating a natural curtain.

This Midori no Kaaten softens the says of light coming into the room and is also effective in holding back the room temperature from rising too high, so it also contributes to electricity savings. Also looking out from inside the room, the streams of sunshine as seen through the green of the leaves are particularly beautiful and it look cool.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to make a Midori no Kaaten this year, but the gymnasium in my neighborhood has one set up. Watching the little seedlings gradually grow long is really fun. By the time the rainy season is over, it will grow into a wonderful green curtain.

Do you have any Midori no Kaaten nearby ?

Do you think you'd like to make one ?

Examination success in Japan

This year again, the entrance examination season has arrived.

School entrance examinations are held from January to February, looking towards the school entrance period which takes place in April in Japan. During this season, various “support goods” go on sale intended for the students,  who, despite the cold, are studying day and night to sit the exams .

There are a wide range of goods, starting with the standard Japanese good luck charms for example,  and spanning to include stationary goods and knick-knacks. But recently, new edible goods stand-out especially.

Making use of puns on words meaning good luck, in an attempt to win the hearts of examination students, there are a lot of sweets out on sale within the stores.

For example :-
The corn snack 'Curl' (pronounced kaaru) made a version called 'Ukaaru' with a play on words on 'Ukaru' which means 'pass the test'.

Kit Kat used the pun on 'kitto' which means 'surely' and created a version with the copy 'Kitto Sakura Saku' which literally means 'The Cherry Blossoms will surely bloom'. 'Sakura Saku' is a metaphor for exam success. [School entrance season also coincides with the cherry blossom season].  And each piece of chocolate contains a message of support for the test takers.

A five-sided mug cup is available (5 sides = Go Kaku ) a play on the word 'Goukaku' which means 'success or pass'.

They are almost all just puns or dull jokes, but sometimes it might be a good idea to relax and eat some of these sweets (taking a break from studying) don't you think ?

Goldfish scooping

Every summer there are many festivals held in various places in Japan. This year due to the large earthquake that occurred in the Tohoku area, some areas are holding back a little on the festivities . However, on the other hand, some people feel, “Especially in low times, we should be outgoing and energetic”, we should hold lots of summer festivals filled with prayers of recovery.

At the summer festivals there are various stalls lined up in a row. But the shining star among these is a stall featuring a game called Kingyo Sukui

Kingyo Sukui is a game in which one tries to catch some fish swimming around a tank with a thing called a Poi. A poi is a scoop made out paper or very thin traditional wafer paper which tears easily when put into water. The point is to try to catch as many fish as you can before your Poi rips.... the faces of the people doing the Kingyo Sukui are extremely serious.

Please watch this video showing people trying their hands at Kingyo Sukui

In my home, we have a goldfish that was won in a Kingyo Sukui game 6 years ago. It has become really big now and swims around in its tank energetically every day.

Recently, there are technical skill competitions and there are even online games that you can play in your own time.

Japan's prefectural logos

Japan's current administrative districts are, one municipality ( Tokyo city), one region ( Hokkaido prefecture), 2 metropolitan districts ( Osaka city and Kyoto city) and 43 prefectures. Altogether they make 47 prefectural districts and are known as the [Itto, ichi dou, ni fu, yon ju san ken] or one city, one region, two metropoles and 43 prefectures.

Most of the prefectural districts have a flower, tree, bird, animal, song, or flag etc that serve as their established symbol. They also have a logo known as a Ken sho. Their designs symbolically express either the topography, history, or culture etc of each of the prefectures.

Many Ken sho feature the characters in the prefectures' names and local special products among other things. Also they often feature the shape of the prefecture designed artistically. When I travel by car, I like to confirm the logo of each prefecture at the prefectural border ( on the “From this point you are entering XX prefecture” sign)

The cities, towns and villages positioned below the prefectural districts also have designed logos too.

What is the logo for the place where you live.
What's the origin of it ?
