Japanese Carp Streamers

May 5th in Japan is a national holiday known as Children's day.
In the past it used to be known as Boy's Day, a day on which people would pray for their boys to be raised in good health and spirit, but today it is for both girls and boys without distinction, and has come to be known as Children's Day.

On this Children's Day, in families with sons , they put up poles up in their gardens and raise "Koi Nobori". This "Nobori" or banner is a sign to show that a son has been born. Why is the banner made in the shape of a "Koi" or carp ? According to Chinese legend, when carp swim up against the swift currents of a river, they would  would turn into dragons and rise up to the heavens, in other words this the carp was a symbol of success.

There is a song which goes, "Yane yori takai Koi Nobori..." (carp streamers taller than the house's roof...), but recently you hardly ever see this sight. Houses have become smaller, and condominiums do not have gardens - there are some small "Kou Nobori" made for the verandah or entrance hall. But these are a little sad, don't you think ?

What do you do in your country to wish for children's health ?

Please click the link to listen to the "Koi Nobori" song.

Winter preparations in Hokkaido

I live in Hokkaido in Japan. This is positioned in the northern part of Japan and is where the first snow of winter falls.

On November 15th the first snow icon appeared on the weather forecast . Moreover, the information stated that it would pile up a little. So I promptly went out to the tire shop in my neighborhood and had my car's tires changed to the winter-use ones.

When this season comes, at intersections and on hill roads, boxes like the one in the photo above are set up around the town. What do you think these boxes are ? ...Well they are known as 'Sand Boxes'. There are bags packed full of sand inside. When the winter roads freeze over, they become slippery. Its really dangerous if you slip, so we sprinkle the sand on the roads.

When the Hokkaido people see these boxes, they feel that winter has come at last.
What preparations are made for when the seasons change in your town ?

Wild animal

I live in Hokkaido in Japan. Hokkaido is popular sight-seeing spot in Japan since it still has a lot of natural habitat left intact.
There are also a lot of wild animals.

The biggest city in Hokkaido is Sapporo, but when you go into the suburbs you can find wild animals like :-

But not all the animals that inhabit the Hokkaido island are cute.
There is the brutal and ferocious Hokkaido Brown Bear

The venomous Nihon- Mamushi or Japanese Copperhead

And sometimes animals dart out onto the roads. The number of accidents by cars swerving to avoid animals are not few. Therefore there are signs to call people's attention to this along the roads that read “Beware of Animals !”
And at tourist areas and campgrounds, there are signs alerting people of the dangers.

The photo above which reads [Kuma Shutsu Botsu Chui] means that bears () are known to come out () here so please be careful (注意).

In your country, what type of wild animals do you have ? In what ways do you have to be careful ? Can you see any unusual signs there ?

Dan Sha Ri ( Japanese yoga house cleaning techniques ?)

★English translation

Recently I am really into Dan Sha Ri.
There are many people among Japanese that do not know what this word means. Its not in the dictionary.
This word is taken from the 3 Yoga philosophies:- Dan Gyou , Sha Gyou (austerity), Ri Gyou (detachment) .
The word Gyo means action or deed. And so what do Dan, Sha and Ri mean ?
Dan = to abstain from taking in things that are not you do not need .
Sha = to throw out things in your house that you do not need.
Ri = to separate yourself from attachments.

The philosophy deals with you taking a good look and re-evaluate the various things in your house and workspace and throwing out the things that you do not need, and organizing the things that you do, and making a comfortable space for yourself.
I found about these words on TV, and looked it up on the internet, and then bought a book on Dan Sha Ri .
While reading the book I wanted to start cleaning the house soon. In my house there are many clothes that I haven't worn for years, shoes that I don't wear, books that I never read, there are so many things that I do not need.

I have always thought that my house is small, but really there are so many things that it just felt small.
I am in the middle of Dan Sha Ri. I am taking a look at each thing and asking myself whether I really need it, so its taking a long time.

And now I have a lot of trash stacked up, and really looking forward to the trash day.
It feels great after cleaning up.
Next I buy something, I think I'm going to ask myself whether I really need this or not before buying.
Have you tried Dan Sha Ri too ?
