Golden Week

In Japan we have a long vacation from May 3rd until May 6th (or for earlier people from April 29th to May 6th) which is called Golden Week. For those of you living in Japan, how was your Golden Week ?

This year I didn't make any plans in advance but, on the day's spur of the moment, I decided to take a day trip to a town called Obi in Miyazaki prefecture.

It is an atmospheric town with an Edo era castle and are some traditional samurai residences lined up (along the streets), so that it is also known as the "the little Kyoto of Kyushu". I perused and took a walk around this town for about 3 hours. And on the walk I came across a "power spot" called the 'Shiawase Sugi' . There were four Sugi (or Japanese cedar) trees and apparently if you stand in the middle of these trees you can become happy. After that I stopped over at a 'Dango' (Japanese sweets) shop and ate some delicious 'Dango'.

Despite it being an unplanned day trip, the fact that I arrived at an unexpected power spot and got to eat some delicious Dango was really fun.
I'm already thinking about the next thing -  "What should I do for the Summer holiday ?".

Sweet Japanese drink Amazake

Do you know what 'Ama Zake' is ?
The name includes the kanji for alcohol ( sake酒 ) but it doesn't actually have any alcohol in it.
It is a sweet drink made from rice and you mix it with hot water to drink..

You can buy 'Ama zake' at any Japanese supermarket, and you can also drink it at Japanese-style cafes but in my home, my mother makes 'Ama zake' every year. My father's hobby is growing rice, so as soon as the new rice is harvested, they make “this year's Ama zake”. And they've made some delicious 'Ama zake' this year as well.

When I was young, my grandmother used make Ama zake for me from rice that she had grown herself. It was so delicious, and in winter, I used to drink Ama zake a lot more than I drank warm milk or even cocoa.
For me, 'Ama zake' is a nostalgic taste, and is something that I cannot live without in winter.
If you get a chance, please try to drink some Ama zake.

Sakura Jima – an active volcano

In Kagoshima city, where I live there is a volcano named Sakura Jima .
Sakura Jima is an active volcano and today it erupted.

When Sakura Jima has an eruption, it carries volcanic ash towards the direction of the city and it is bothersome.
If you have washing on the line or futons out to dry, they get dirty and you have to wash them all again. Cars become instantly blackened. In summer, the volcanic ash on your sweaty skin, feels disgusting and ladies have to redo their make-up over and over again.
When it rains you need an umbrella, but in Kagoshima, when the volcano erupts, volcanic ash falls down, and you need an umbrella then too.

However, despite this, I like Sakura Jima. It has a lot of different faces to show us , depending on the day and the time. If Sakura Jima was not there it would be very missed .

Is there any feature in your hometown that people enjoy despite the fact that it both bothers everyone ?
