Nagashi Soumen

Yesterday, there was an annual Nagashi Soumen (washed down noodles) event held at a nearby shrine, so I went there with my daughter.

Bamboo poles are cut into half and joined together like a playground slide , and in these Soumen (thin white noodles) is washed down and we eat it, so it is called “Nagashi Soumen”. Since the Soumen is being washed down the poles with water it looks refreshingly cool. It's really fun, like a game, because you have to scoop up the noodles as they come splashing down with chopsticks. Eating , while listening to the excited buzz of children's voices screaming,“I got some !” “I didn't get any!” is also part of the fun.

Do you have some interesting ways to eat food in your country like this Nagashi Soumen way ? Please let me know if you do. You can add comments in Japanese or English below.

Japanese Harvest Moon

Have you heard of the term 'Chuu Shu no Meigetsu' (or Harvest Moon in English) ? This year this day falls on Monday September 12th , and this day is said to be the day when the moon is at its most beautiful all year.

We decorate the place using 'Susuki' or Japanese Pampas grass and we make offerings of dumplings and sweet potatoes and enjoying gazing at the beautiful moon.

Every year I watch the moon on this day from my veranda but this year I think I'd like to go to a nearby shrine and join the moon watching party there. Apparently there are various moon watching events taking place in different venues .

Why don't you join us and watch the moon together on this day ?

Hay Fever

When we think of spring, we think of plum blossoms, cherry blossoms, it is the fun season when the temperature warms up and we can watch flowers bloom. But ever since I got 'Kafun sho' , this has become a quite depressing season for me. 'Kafun sho' is the allergic illness to plant pollen that makes you sneeze, your nose run and makes your eyes itchy. When I go outside, I have to put on a mask and wear glasses. On days when the pollen count is high I have to hang my washing up inside the house. I really hope that spring is over soon. How is your nose doing during this season ?

10 Health Rules' from a Japanese Zen Temple

I found this list of'10 Health Rules' when I went to a Zen temple in Yamaguchi . It was on sale there, one for 30 yen. I have it hanging on our toilet wall, so that I can look at it easily from time to time.I don't know who first thought of these '10 Health Rules', but since they are written all in Kanji, my guess is thatthey came from China . It says some really useful things on it.

「少」stands for 'sukunai' , and 「多」stands for 'ooi ' so the meaning is easy to figure out . It would be really good if you could heed all 10 of the Health rules ; and especially for me I have to take care to heed rule 3 and rule 6. Rule 3 states ' Eat Less, Chew More' and Rule 6 states 'Drive Less, Walk More'.

Which Rule would you like to heed more ?

1.Less salt, More vinegar
2.Less meat, More vegetables
3.Eat less, Chew more
4.Less candy, More fruits
5Get angry less, Laugh more
6.Drive less, Walk more
7.Desire less, Give more
8.Wear less thick clothing, Soak in a bath more
9.Worry less, Sleep more

Polite prefixes and suffixes

I'm originally from Yamaguchi prefecture, which is the most western prefecture on the island of Honshu, so while living here in Kyoto I often find myself surprised by one thing. It's that people here add the suffix 'san' to lots of things.

'San' is usually used as an honorific title to people's names (edit. kind of like Mr. or Ms.)so we use it in such cases as Tanaka san (Mr. Tanaka) or Yamada san (Ms. Yamada), but here in Kyoto (or more specifically in the Kansai area), they add the suffix san to things other than people.

At the front of the word, they also add a prefix of 'O' which indicates respect or politeness. Therefore you have situations where the word for potato (imo) becomes O Imo San (which literally translates to something like 'Honorable Mr. Potato' !!), the word for bean (mame) becomes O Mame San (respected Madam Bean!!).

In the case of shrines and temples, they don't use the prefix 'O' but, the people in this area often add the suffix 'san'. So Yasaka Shrine becomes Yasaka san and Kiyomizu temple is known locally as Kiyomizu san.

Some people even say 'Ohayo san' to mean good morning (usually simply ohayo in the rest of Japan).

I think this greeting has a gentle ring to it though, and I think it's really nice, but the picture below shows this habit of being polite being taken a little too far in my opinion. This is a sign board I found in my neighborhood. What do you think?

Haunted House

Have you ever seen a ghost ?

I have never seen a real ghost but, I have seen some fake ghosts in haunted houses a number of times.

Obake Yashiki (or haunted houses) are facilities that are aimed at giving an experience of pseudo-fear for pleasure. They can be found at amusement parks but we also make hand-made ones at culture festivals at school too.

Last month at my son's kindergarten I went into a hand-made haunted house. As is standard, there was a ghost dressed in a kimono and a mummy inside there. It was gloomy inside, and really quiet – it was quite scary - that chilly feeling is almost unbearable.

You really have to try a haunted house in summer! If you get a chance, please try out a Japanese haunted house.

正座 Sitting Seiza : kneeling with feet bent flat on the floor

I'm not good at sitting Seiza. If I sit in this position for a long time, my feet get pins and needles.

Sitting Seiza, as the picture above shows, is the sitting position where the instep or tops of the knees and feet are lain onto the floor, with your bottom placed on top of your heels.

It is the traditional way of sitting in Japan but, because the use of tatami flooring in rooms is decreasing and people have become used to a lifestyle in which chairs are commonly used, the opportunities to sit in a Seiza position are becoming rarer.

That said, there are still some situations when you have to sit Seiza. These include tea ceremony practices, funerals and when you visit a place with a traditional Japanese room.

Even when I try certain methods which apparently help your feet from getting numb, like spreading your ankles wider and interlocking your big toes, I can still only sit like that for 20 minutes tops.

Even though I am not good at sitting Seiza, I have taken up learning the tea ceremony ! And because I am always worried about my feet getting numb, my tea ceremony serving procedures are a little rushed. So my teacher constantly scolds me, 'This isn't a kitchen chore, you know !'

Have you ever tried sitting Seiza in a traditional Japanese style ? Add a comment in English or Japanese below.

酢 Vinegar

Do you do anything to stay healthy?

Do you jog ? Go to the gym ? Take supplements or take care not to eat too much ? Do you try not to build up stress or avoid people that you don't get along with ? I'm sure you have a lot of different ways.

Recently I was recommended by someone to try drinking vinegar. Apple vinegar.

In April, a representative from a drug company visited my house. In Japan, we have a system called the Oki Kusuri ( where representatives from drug companies visit houses and shops and leave their companies' samples . See our Community news on medicine here http://www.japonin.com/community-news/2007-06-18.php )

The drug company representative comes to our houses and leaves a box of medicine. The next time they visit, we have to pay for the medicine that we've used during the time. This representative said to me " Please try some of this apple vinegar, it's good for the body. If you drink vinegar, you tires less easily. There is an old saying 'Tsukarezu Zu' ( which roughly means 'With vinegar – you don't get tired'). " and recommended me to try it. Well seeing as he was the pharmacist, I trusted him and started to drink it. It has been 2 months since I started it. I feel as though my body has become less susceptible to fatigue. Recently I have been bounding up the stairs skipping every other step!

Why don't you try drinking some vinegar too ? Fruit vinegar is very easy to drink.
