Wisdom teeth

I had my Oya Shirazu (wisdom teeth) out last month.
It was a big deal for someone who hates dentists as much as I do.
Actually this was my third time. I still have one left to pull.

By the way do you know the origin of the name Oya Shirazu ? The Oya Shirazu are different from baby teeth and your normal teeth because in most people's cases, they usually come out when we have left home and so our parents ( or Oya ) do not know of them ( Shiranai or Shirazu= to not know). That is why they were named Oya Shirazu.

In English , because the teeth usually grow after one becomes an adult and after one gains some wisdom, they are called wisdom teeth. The names vary from country to country, don't they ? Isn't it interesting ?

If the teeth grow straight up, then they do not need to be pulled out. However, for reasons I don't know , in my case all three of my teeth grew sideways so there was no choice other than to pull them out.

I pray that the last remaining tooth grows straight up. Why on earth do we these teeth grow for ?!?
What name do you have for these bothersome Oya Shirazu in your country ?
Post a comment in English or Japanese.

Returning the Crested Iris to its natural habitat

I live in Niigata. In this blog I am going to introduce some Niigata news.
Last year, on September 26th ,some Crested Iris were released into the wild from captivity .
This means that human-bred birds were sent into their natural habitats for the first time.

The Crested Iris was a bird that could be seen in various areas of Japan along time ago. However, people caught and killed them for their beautiful white feathers, and due to environmental pollution the Crested Iris could no longer breed here . Only a few birds were left alive in a place named Sado in Niigata, before they finally became extinct .

The scientific name of the Crested Iris is Nipponia Nippon . The Crested Iris is indeed the most Japanese of birds. This can not be allowed to happen thought Japan, so they asked China to donate some Crested Iris and raised a lot of Irises. And then they preserved the Sado area so that the Irises could live there.

At this time only 10 birds have been returned to the wild. The Crested Irises have been connected to a GPS system so that you can check if they are healthy or where they are. Unfortunately I could only confirm 8 of the 10 Irises . I wonder where the other 2 could be ?

If you are interested in it , take a look at the link below.

Takoyaki parties

I live in Osaka.

One of Osaka's famous foods is Takoyaki. Have you heard of this food ?

There are many delicious Takoyaki shops in Osaka but you can also make it at home using a Takoyaki Maker. These machines are sold in department stores and electric goods stores.

You get Takoyakj flour or corn flour, and mix it with eggs, soup broth and water to make the dough. And then pour the dough into the Takoyaki machine. Inside it you add octopus cuts, pieces of Tempura batter, red vinegared ginger, and green onions and then spin it all round and round until it makes a ball shape. When the surface starts to brown evenly all over, it is ready. Add Takoyaki sauce, mayonnaise and sprinkle a kind of powdered seaweed, and dried bonito flakes over it and eat .

The Takoyaki Maker in the picture is my own one.

Takoyaki parties are really fun, we get friends and family to come over and all crowd around the Takoyaki Maker and eat while discussing whose Takoyaki is the best done.

Aromatherapy

When even Japanese people hear the phrase Houkouryouhou, very few of them would know what it meant.
However if they were to read the Kanij and or if you were to say aromaserapi ( in katakana) then most people would understand.
When you feel irritated a nice scent can help you to calm down and the smell of cooking garlic can bring out an appetite.
Recently I am really into aromatherapy.
I wouldn't go as far as to call it a treatment or remedy, but I really like to relax and enjoy a good fragrance..
I cannot afford expensive goods so I tend to buy everything from my neighborhood 100 yen shop. If you add different oils to the same pot, the aromas mix up together, so I decided to use just one pot for one aroma and before I knew it, I had gained a collection of pots.
Different scents are said to have different effects, but I'm not too particular about it. I just find the scent I like and use that.
Every day, I always enjoy the scent of oils burning over a candle flame during lessons. And at night, before I go to bed the smell of lavender seems to be good for me – because I sleep like a log.
It's not just the scents either, I love gazing at the softly flickering light of the candle too.
On nights when I have nothing planned, I turn off the lights, play some of my favorite music and gaze at the candle-light sipping a glass of wine....romantic nights like those are actually quite rare.

Would you like to try or do you like aromatherapy ?

  ★English translation

When one talks of the taste of autumn in Japan, one has to mention Matsutake. Matsutake rice, Matsutake tempura, grilled Matsutake etcetera there are various ways to eat this delicacy but steamed Matsutake in an earthenware pot is exceptional.

Matsutake is a type of mushroom that grows in Japanese red pine fields.

However since the 1970s, Japanese red pines begun to die out due to insect pest infections and pollution, so the price of Matsutake began to rise. Since Matsutake cannot be cultivated, it became a prize far beyond reach for the general public, however after large amounts of foreign grown products were imported, the prices have dropped significantly and leveled out. Domestic Matsutake is still as expensive as ever, as mentioned above.

The fact that quintessential taste of Japanese autumn is actually made from foreign products does seem kind of strange but thanks to these, we can enjoy the wonderful scent of earthenware pot-steamed Matsutake. To make it; you get pre-prepared Matsutake mushrooms, Ginkgo nuts, chicken meat, shrimp, and put them all into the bottom of the earthenware pot, and add some seasoned broth and cook until the chiken is heated through on a medium flame. Finally add water cress and then just before you eat squeeze some Sudachi Japanese lime over it. I would really love to have this dish this autumn too.

In your country, what kind of flavours do you have for this season ?

Good luck cat

Do you have Mane Neko or other good luck ornamentsin your country ?

A Mane Neko is an ornament in the shape of a cat which invites or calls good luck..
It is generally believed that cats which have their right leg up are bringers of good luck with money , cats with their left legs upbring in many customers. There are some cats that have both legs up, but many people don't like these because they have an image of being greedy cats and there is a punchline that this type of cat is raising his hands as a sign of giving up.

The standard cat is usually like the one in the picture, a cat with three colors but in recent years there are other colors other than the traditional white ; there are also red cats, black ones, pink ones, blue ones, gold colored and other colors too. The blue one's indicate luck and safety with traffic, pink ones invite love etc each of them have different meanings.

There are some which are made for export to America which have the opposite hand postions. Apparently the back of the hand is facing upwards .This is because the hand gesture to invite or call is different in America to Japan .It is interesting how the same ornaments for different countries can be so different isn't it ?

Tea

Do you like drinking tea ?

I love it and everyday I make myself all sorts of different brews.

In my case, most of the time I drink Mugi Tea with meals, black tea at tea-time, and at night while I am working I like to drink herb tea. I especially like herb tea, so whenever I buy a range of herb teas from the shops, I make my own blend. Sometimes, there are times when my blends fail but all in all it is really interesting because I can make up my own favorite flavors. The weather is hot recently so I recommend iced teas. Mint tea gives a fresh sensation and makes you feel cool. Go ahead and try it out .

If you have a favorite tea, please let me know – just add a comment below.

炭 Charcoal

Do you know what charcoal is ? There are lots of types, for example high-grade charcoal produced from ubame oak among others.

The ways it is often used as deodorant; people put them in their refrigerators, toilet, foyer, cupboards . Apparently charcoal has a lot of little holes, which absorb odors.

At our house we have charcoal placed in our refrigerator, foyer andtoilet. There is also some charcoal placed next to our computer. This is because I recently heard that charcoal can also absorb electromagnetic waves.
We also have high-grade charcoal produced from ubame oakplaced around the kitchen because it chemicals. Whenever we cook some rice, I place some charcoal in the rice cooker and use while cooking.
Everyone here at JOI often use their computers, so please try to place some charcoal around your PC. I don't how effective it is though ...
