A society based on mutual trust

It has been said the Japanese society is one that is built on the belief that human nature is fundamentally good or a society based on mutual trust.
It has been 60 years since the end of the war, and of course one can see that some of the features of this society have changed, but as far as I can see, within my own my family ; my wife who has been a full-time home-maker seems to have changed a great deal, whereas I, a person who has spent 40 years working within a company and thus supposedly has been within a society based on contracts all this time, I don't feel I have changed at all .
The differences between us show up the most in our changing attitudes towards doctors. When I go to see a doctor, I usually listen to what he says obediently ( agree ' Yes, yes' ), thank him and go home.My wife on the other hand, collects plenty of data, itemizes her symptoms in detail and then when she gets to the hospital, she asks the doctor various questions. And she further questions the doctor's answers.
The other day, I was working around the garden, I felt a cramping pain in my chest muscles and couldn't move for about 10 minutes. So the next day I went to the hospital.
The doctor at the university hospital took a look at my X-ray photo, and asked me how long I had been having these symptoms, “They started a few years ago”, I answered.
“Well the photo looks clear, I think it must have been a little muscle pain.” said the doctor, “If the symptoms have been ongoing for several years, you can rest assured that it is not life-threatening.” I felt glad and went home.
When my wife heard my story, she said, “ So, you went, but you didn't solve a thing.”
“Oh I see,” I thought, “So that's how she feels.”
Well, I guess I'm just a typical Japanese man.

My Boom (an obsolete Japanese term?)

The phrase 'my boom', which is a peculiar Japanese-English term that combines the words 'my' and 'boom' or trend, was first used by the writer Junni Miura in 1994, and it became widely popular at the time. The fact that it has a nice nuance to it and is similar to another popular Japanese phrase 'Dai Boom' or big boom is apparently one of the main reasons it became so popular.

Usually trendy terms like this soon become obsolete language, but this term was included in the 2008 edition of Koujien (a famous Japanese dictionary). It has had amazing longevity, hasn't it? But on the other hand in 2006 it was also listed in the Obsolete Term Encyclopedia! Well, I still use it, but has it gone out of vogue already?

Incidentally my current 'My Boom' is Fetopapu. When I first ate it I thought it that it just felt wrong, but now I feel that it is a healthy and good meal. I go out on my own and eat it about 3 times a week .

What is your 'my boom'? Comments in English or Japanese are welcome.

方言 Local dialects

Do you know that there are different dialects for Keigo or honorific language ?
I live in Hiroshima, and in Hiroshima too there are some peculiar honorific terms. In Hiroshima they add the ending 'shichatta' to the end of a word.
For example 'Have you already eaten ?' is usually said as 'Mou taberaremashitaka ?' in ordinary honorific language, but here they say ' Mou tabechatta desuka ?'
I am originally from Hokkaido, so when I first heard this phrase, I thought to myself “Have I done something wrong”.This is because in standard language, the ending 'shichatta' is short for 'shite shimatta' which can mean 'to have done something mistakenly'.
There is also some unique honorific language in the Osaka dialect too. They add the ending 'haru' to the end of the words, so they say, 'Mou tabe harimashita ?'( Harimasu is the masu form of the verb haru)
In standard Japanese, honorific language is so difficult that even native Japanese speakers make mistakes in its usuage. The local dialect type of honorific language, however is very simple.
It is quite strange, when you get used to it, local dialect style honorific language actually sounds gentler.

Conveyor belt' sushi or 'Revolving' sushi

In Ikura sensei's blog, she introduced the subject of sushi but do you know about 'revolving' sushi ? As you can see in the photograph, this means a type of sushi shop which has 'lanes' or revolving conveyor belts on which some plates of sushi are placed to rotate around the shop. The system is that customers pick up the sushi they would like to eat, together with the plate and eat the sushi off the plate. If the sushi one wants to eat doesn't revolve around, one can press the 'order' button and order it as well. The menu is plentiful ; apart from sushi there are also some other side menu items likechawan mushi ( which is a type of savoury egg custard ), aka dashi ( which is a kind of red miso soup broth ), age mono ( which is a selection of deep fried food ), some desserts, drinks etcetera which all revolve around. My kids love Kaiten sushi, so we sometimes go. Do you have any Kaiten 'revolving' sushi shops in your country.

Last year the Japanese government decided on a money handout as one of the measures to stimulate the economy .
Every person that is resident in Japan, is eligible to receive a payment of 12,000 yen ( approximately $122US ).
Children under 18 years old, and older people over 65 years old receive 20,000 yen ( approximately $203US ).

This stimulus has been the subject of great debate
Granting of the payments has begun in each city, town, and village from spring this year.

In answer to questionnaires asking how people plan to spend this extraordinary income , most people answered that they planned to go shopping, go out for a meal or save it for their futures.

Department stores, small business, travel agencies etcetera are planning to have some special stimulus payment sales.
Things are bound to get a lot more lively in a short while.

Jigsaw puzzles

Have you ever done a jigsaw puzzle ?
Jigsaw puzzles are made of a single picture that has been divided into a number of pieces and separated which you put together again as a puzzle.
When I was a child, my father bought me a jigsaw puzzle of the Japan map to help me with my geography studies.
That puzzle was very difficult for me since I was only a child, but little by little I began to enjoy seeing the map of Japan gradually becoming complete , and so I became immersed in it .
And that was what sparked my interest in jigsaw puzzles. Even now, if I have some time, I try to do a new jigsaw puzzle. The harder it is to complete, the greater the sense of accomplishment in doing it.It is really fun.

Maiko san - Geisha girls

Do you know what a Maiko san or Geisha girl is ? Have you ever seen one ? I live near Kyoto but I've only twice ever seen a Geisha girl.

Geisha girls or Maiko san have very busy lifestyles. In the afternoons, they take singing, dancing and etiquette lessons. And in the evenings they work, so it is rare to meet one.

The other day, some friends came up to visit Kyoto, so we went to out to Kiyomizu Temple. And there we saw a Geisha girl riding a rickshaw. We were so pleased. But then I thought that something was strange. Usually we can only meet Geisha girls in the areas of the city known as Hanamachi. I've never heard of Geisha girls being seen in tourist areas. When I looked carefully, I realized that it wasn't a real Geisha girl. It was a tourist dressed up as a Geisha girl. Even though she was not a real Geisha girl, her figure in a kimono looked very beautiful.

It has become trendy among tourists recently to dress up in costumes. Apparently ladies can dress up as Geisha girls and men can dress up as Samurai.
Why don't you come to Kyoto and dress up too ?

Ordering for things

Recently there are many people engaging in what is called Otori Yose in Japan.

Otori Yose is when you have some products sent from various places directly to your home.
According to a certain research firm's survey, the top 3 most ordered products are :-
1 . sweets2. seafood or processed marine products3. meat ( especially ham )
But its not only food, you can also get local products featuring mascots or characters of the areas.

With the spread of the internet, anyone can easily get hold of things from different places, without even having to go to the areas. I also sometimes send away for my favorite sweets. It has really become a convenient world hasn't it ?

Have you ever sent away for anything ?
What kind of things do you order online or otherwise?

正座 Sitting Seiza : kneeling with feet bent flat on the floor

I'm not good at sitting Seiza. If I sit in this position for a long time, my feet get pins and needles.

Sitting Seiza, as the picture above shows, is the sitting position where the instep or tops of the knees and feet are lain onto the floor, with your bottom placed on top of your heels.

It is the traditional way of sitting in Japan but, because the use of tatami flooring in rooms is decreasing and people have become used to a lifestyle in which chairs are commonly used, the opportunities to sit in a Seiza position are becoming rarer.

That said, there are still some situations when you have to sit Seiza. These include tea ceremony practices, funerals and when you visit a place with a traditional Japanese room.

Even when I try certain methods which apparently help your feet from getting numb, like spreading your ankles wider and interlocking your big toes, I can still only sit like that for 20 minutes tops.

Even though I am not good at sitting Seiza, I have taken up learning the tea ceremony ! And because I am always worried about my feet getting numb, my tea ceremony serving procedures are a little rushed. So my teacher constantly scolds me, 'This isn't a kitchen chore, you know !'

Have you ever tried sitting Seiza in a traditional Japanese style ? Add a comment in English or Japanese below.

袴 Hakama - a long pleated skirt worn over a kimono or man's formal divided skirt

In Japanese society most systems end in march and start in April. This month is March 2009 but it is still said to be part of Fiscal 2008, since April 2008 until March 2009 is thought of as one year. Therefore now we are at the end of Fiscal 2008 and so companies are extremely busy, students are approaching their graduation ceremonies - it is a period of great changes.
For their graduation ceremonies, many Japanese girls, wear Hakama. The archetype for the modern Hakama was first made in the pre-Yayoi period, between the 3rd and 8th centuries BC. There are many types of Hakama - there is of course the male Hakama for menswear. Among which, we have the formal Hakama decorated with the family's crest called the Montsuki Haori Hakama and which is the most formal of all Japanese traditional wear. However, recently there are less people seen wearing Japanese clothing out . For someone like me , who loves the kimono, it is a real shame.
Do you like Japanese clothing ?
Are traditional clothing becoming rarer in your country too ?
