Summer Grand Sumo Tournament

The Summer Grand Sumo Tournament has begun. "What ?! Is it summer already ?" I hear some of you ask - well according to the calendar it is already summer.

May 5th was Children's day, a National Holiday and at the same time, it was also Rikka ( the first day of summer).

Grand Sumo tournaments take place 6 times a year. The Sumo wrestling tournaments are held on every odd month and each tournament lasts for 15 days.

During this summer's tournament, the wrestler that is getting the most attention is the Ozeki, Baruto.
Baruto was the runner-up of the last tournament and got promoted to the rank of Ozeki.
He is the favorite to win this time's tournament along with the winner of the last tournament, The Yokozuna Hakuho.

Hakuho is from Mongolia and Baruto comes from Estonia. They are both excellent Sumo wrestlers, so either one could win, however the fact that there are no Japanese wrestlers' names among the favorites is a bit of a shame though.

Civil War military commanders in vogue !

The heroes and military commanders during the Japan's Sengoku era (or civil war period) have become a boom among young ladies in Japan recently. T-Shirts and hats featuring motifs of these military leaders are selling well.

The boom is apparently influenced by computer games in which these military commanders battle each other. There are some who have become fans of the voice actors that provide the voices for the games, some ladies have become fans of the way in which the military commanders are represented in the games with beautiful faces, and apparently there are also some young ladies who enjoy getting dressed up as the military commanders.

Speaking of military leaders, they used to be popularexclusively among men,so why are they popular among young women at this time. When commenting on this boom of military commanders among young women, some psychiatrists maintain that, “ These women are looking for an ideal man in these images of Sengoku era leaders. And they get a refreshing feeling from doing what they want to do, unconstrained from their positions as women, when they get to act out the roles of these military leaders.”

Music

Do you listen to music ?

When I was younger I used to think that I could never imagine a life without music.
But the busier I become with work , housework and raising kidsthe less I get to listen to music.

But after joining JOI, I realized that many of the students liked Japanese music, so I also started to listen to music again . And that led me to reaffirm how good it really was .

Music makes life more fun, and helps to cheer you up, doesn't it ?
Professional sports players often listen to music to help them control their emotions.
I think music has the power to make us look positively forward .
If any of you haven't listened to music recently, please try to listen to some soon.

A new season

Its April. In Japan, its the season of 'new beginnings' when new students enter school, and workplaces welcome their new recruits .

I think back to when I was kid, I imagine about when we had changes of classes, took our first looks at the new textbooks from we'd just gotten from school, when we thought about our new lives and felt really nervous.

Even now after I've become an adult, this month feels fresh ; Its when lifestyles may change and we get to meet people we've never met before.

Are the goals and plans you made in January going according to plan ? Those of you whose plans are not going well, or that have failed, why not try to make a new “Japanese style” start of it from April, renew your mind and give another try.

When one thinks of March, one thinks of graduation.

You can often see young female students wearing the Hakama, which is the traditional wear for graduation ceremonies. The figure of a young female student wearing a Hakama brings to mind a certain lead character from a popular 1970s comic book. There is a theory that girls looked up to this character, and that's why they started to wear Hakama to their graduation ceremonies.

Junior high and high school graduation ceremonies always come with tears: tears from saying goodbye to friends and teachers, remembering the fun times and the tough times, and so on. It's a very sentimental experience.

After the graduation ceremony, girls go up to their favorite boys and receive the second button from the top of his uniform. And why the second button? Well, it's said to be the closest button to his heart, and so by receiving it you receive his heart.

How was your graduation ceremony?

What kind of parties have you had lately?

I haven't been to any dance parties or anything flashy like that recently, but I've often had parties where we take food to each other's houses. I always have the kids with me, so parties at peoples houses are better because I don't have to feel so constrained. Of course, I consult with my friends in advance to make sure that we don't bring the same food. We enjoy chatting immensely and also delight in tasting different families' cuisine. It is a cheap way to have a party.

The other day, we had a tako-yaki party at a friend's house. While preparing the tako-yaki (octopus dumplings) using a tako-yaki machine, we ate the tako-yaki and, of course, had a good chat. Tako-yaki parties are very popular with kids, and all the kids made their own tako-yaki dumplings by themselves. The kids seem to find the tako-yaki they make themselves good-tasting, and eat a lot of them.

The thing I look forward to most about parties is talking. Of course, delicious food is another must have!

What kind of parties do you have?

It's now the season when we find ourselves constantly waiting for the cherry blossom bloom reports. And in this season, cake, sweets and candy stores have started to decorate their shop windows with the color of cherry blossoms, a little earlier than the other stores.

When one thinks of traditional Japanese sweets of spring, sakura mochi is the classic standard answer. But recently, some western sweets with gay colors have also become popular; these are called sakura Sweets. They are cakes, cookies and ice creams all made in the image of cherry blossoms. They are treats for the eyes and the mouth.

Since sakura sweets are limited to only one season, the fact that we can eat them only during this time is another one of their attractions. If you get the chance, please try some of these tasty cherry blossom style sweets.

When you see the word 'Kansho' or appreciation, what kind of things come to mind ?
Appreciation of film, music appreciation, appreciation of art, theater appreciation, are some of phrases that use this word.
The word 'Kansho' actually means watching, listening to, reading or in some way experiencing some art or a performance and enjoying it.

Since the beginning of this year, I have been to a violin concert, a J-Pop singer's concert, and also watched a musical.
Until now, I have never really had the time or the money to go to concerts or go to the theater, but now that I've come to do so, I got so moved by the impact of seeing it live.
Appreciation of music at home is nice and convenient but its also nice to go and see it live every once in a while. I think I want to go again.

What do you appreciate to look at, read or listen to ?

Female History Lovers

Have you heard the coined phrase “Reki Jo” ? Reki Jo are ladies (Josei) who are into history (Rekishi) . This phrase won the first prize for the top buzzword of 2009. Recently the number of Reki Jo are increasing in Japan.

I'm not a Reki Jo but, I really like castles. The most popular castle in Japan is Himeji Castle. It is one of the World Heritage sites and is also designated as a National Treasure. The walls are a white color and it is an extremely beautiful castle.

My personal favorite castle is Azuchi Castle. Unfortunately, we can no longer see this castle. Only the ruins of it remain in Shiga Prefecture, where I live. Its constructionwas begun in 1576by Nobunaga Oda but it was subsequently abandoned in 1585. It had a very short history, but fromevidence shown in the remaining documents, it was a very extravagant castle.

If you ever get the chance, please try to go and see some castles and get a feel of Japanese history.

Love letters

The other day, there was a woman on TV who corrected or wrote out dictated love letters for people as a business.

You might feel that love letters are a little old-fashioned, but contrary to belief, there seemed to be a lot of people who use this service.

At this time, mail has become mainstream and we often see the mechanical script typed by a computer, so conversely putting one's sentiments into a hand-written letter is probably quite new now. Personally I would fee a little embarrased correcting another person's love letter so I wouldn't want to do it but...

Recently, there are a lot of services for people who want to express various feelings of love. You can have a message projected on the screen before a movie begins, or have a message printed onto the petals of a rose, or even have someone fill a room up with balloons saying I love you; are among the many ways.
They all seem so romantic.

If you wanted to tell that special someone how you felt how which method would you use
