花火 Fireworks in Japan

Recently, on weekend evenings, we have been playing with fireworks. When it gets dark, the kids, after eating their supper, check that it isn't raining, get the bag of fireworks, a bucket and a candle ready and come to call me and plead with eyes full of excitement. When we start, I make them promise, “Only one bag today, OK ?” but they keep pestering me “Just one more, one more !”, and it goes on and on...

The kids are still young so they can only play with hand-held fireworks. But among them, there are swirly ones, and ones that change color so even adults can really enjoy themselves. I heard from a friend that there are some fireworks that give off a scent, so this week I have decided to go and look for these.

Since I had kids, I have enjoyed the different seasons more and more. Just a while ago, when it got dark, I took them down to a nearby stream to watch some fireflies. And now, its fireworks. I wonder what they are going to pester me about next.

Are you enjoying this season too ?

The 2002 World Cup was co-sponsored by Korea and Japan. At this time, these cards were handed out. I got this from an English friend. According to my friend's explanation, at that time there were some problems with hooligans. These cards were apparently made for Japanese audiences who came to the stadiums, to help them understand that,“Not all the people are this violent”.

The cards covered the history of soccer, an introduction of the current England team, and introduced some English phrases, like “Nice move !”, “Send him off !”

Japanese toilets

The above photograph shows a sign that was in the toilets inside a service area ( or rest stop ). It indicates which toilets are currently vacant. This type of toilet is very rare but in Japan toilets are constantly evolving.

There are various hi-tech toilets; for example some, when you enter the room, the toilet seat automatically lifts up,or when you sit down, they make a flushing noise or when you get up and start to leave, it automatically flushes for you.

The flushing water sound function is made in order to reduce the amount of water used. In Japan, there are many women that do not like other people to hear the sound of them using the toilet, so they flush the toilet while relieving themselves, and then flush again when they're done, so this flushing water sound function was invented in order to cut down on the waste of water. It is now incorporated into many toilet designs now.

Also toilets that have heated toilet seats and warm-water cleansing have become common, not only in public facilities, but also in ordinary homes too.

Do you knowwhat this flower is ?
In Japanese its called a Suzuran (Lilly of the Valley in English).
The name comes from the words Suzu which means bell, and Ran which means orchid, so it looks just like its name.
I love this flower because it is such cute, small white flower.

For Ohanami (lit. flower-viewing), cherry blossoms are very popular, but actually in my hometown, we have the largest field of Lilly of the Valley growing en masse, and here a flower-viewing event known as the Suzuran Kanshou Kai (lit. Lilly of the Valley Appreciation Meeting) is held every year (see above URL).

There is really nice aroma covering over the whole area where this flower blooms.
A few years have passed since I left my hometown, but I can never forget the beauty of the scenery I saw here.
Every time I see this flower, it reminds me of home.
This year, unfortunately, due to some reason or other, the event was canceled.
Many people come to visit this town every year to view these Suzuran.
Suzuran means “good fortune will be bestowed upon you” in the language of flowers. It is wonderful isn't it ? *

What flowers are well-loved in your hometown ?

I found a YouTube video on the subject : (See above URL)
Please enjoy looking at the flowers, while listening to the murmuring of the river together with the sounds of birds chirping. I'm sure you'll feel healed by it.

*(Translators note: in the western system of flower symbolism, the Lilly of the Valley means trustworthiness)

A little while ago I visited a Zen temple called Sho Den Ji. It is located at the foot of Mt. Funayama, north of Kyoto.

It is a small temple which consists only of a main building and an annex for the priest's lodging, but it is an historic temple which dates back more than 700 years to the Kamakura era. The temple was quite deserted, so I was able to sit down on my own on the veranda of the main building and gaze leisurely at thegarden.

It was a dry landscape garden of white sand with a 7:5:3 combination of Azalea ( see photo ) .When I raised my eyes, a thicket of trees came into view. And beyond that, Mt. Hieizan could be seen. The surrounding landscape and the sacred mountain all became a part of this garden. (In Japanese landscaping), the art of borrowing from the landscape is known as Shakkei or borrowed scenery.

Every once in while, I could hear the sound of bird song. It was very quiet. I didn't feel like going home, so much so that I stayed there until the day began to change to dusk.

Have you ever heard of a garden without water or of borrowed scenery ?

May sickness

Have you ever heard of May sickness or Go Gatsu Byou ?
It is the psychologically unstable condition that appears around May, especially among new recruits and new students who started at new companies or new schools in April ( the start of the financial year)or among people who have newly changed their environment .

New lifestyles and human relationships can be very tiring . This fatigue builds up without one knowing it, and after the consecutive May holidays (Golden Week), the signs of this fatigue start to appear; people become irritated and they get into a state where they start to not want to go to work or school. They start to become unable to sleep and lose their appetites. The symptoms of May sickeness depends on each person .

It is called May sickeness, because there are many people that get it in May, but there are some people that get it in June or during different seasons. In other countries it could be October sickness (?).

The cause of May sickness is said to be stress and fatigue . And it is important to remove stress.Play favorite sports, do things you like doing, take things easy and reduce your stress levels. It is also apparently be a good idea to tell your grumbles to family members and friends.

Stress leads to all kinds of diseases, so although it is not an easy thing to do, one really should try to reduce it effectively.

Summer Grand Sumo Tournament

The Summer Grand Sumo Tournament has begun. "What ?! Is it summer already ?" I hear some of you ask - well according to the calendar it is already summer.

May 5th was Children's day, a National Holiday and at the same time, it was also Rikka ( the first day of summer).

Grand Sumo tournaments take place 6 times a year. The Sumo wrestling tournaments are held on every odd month and each tournament lasts for 15 days.

During this summer's tournament, the wrestler that is getting the most attention is the Ozeki, Baruto.
Baruto was the runner-up of the last tournament and got promoted to the rank of Ozeki.
He is the favorite to win this time's tournament along with the winner of the last tournament, The Yokozuna Hakuho.

Hakuho is from Mongolia and Baruto comes from Estonia. They are both excellent Sumo wrestlers, so either one could win, however the fact that there are no Japanese wrestlers' names among the favorites is a bit of a shame though.
