Water bus in Tokyo

When sightseeing in Tokyo, if considering modes of transport, most people naturally think of trains, the subway and the yellow sightseeing buses, but the water bus is also really interesting.
Even though its called a bus, its not a bus with any tires, but a ship that runs on the river. Asakusa, Odaiba and other famous sightseeing spots are connected by ship. There are a number of routes but I recommend the Sumida river line. You can see various bridges and highways from the ship, and can also see the Tokyo Sky Tree as well as other sites.

During this next season in which the cherry blossoms bloom, there seems to be a special tour being held which allows you to see the night sakura blossoms. Do you have water buses in your town as well ? [Add a comment below]

Panda bears in the aquarium

Panda bears in the aquarium

I went to the aquarium the other day.
My daughter really likes the aquarium and we go there so frequently that we have an annual passport (like a one year season ticket) for it.
My daughter's main aim is to see the penguins, so every time we visit she always says “I'm going to see the penguins”.

On that day as well, we were standing in front of the penguins, watching them as we always do, when a small boy and his father came up behind us and we overheard their conversation.

“Where are the pandas?”
“This is an aquarium, there aren't any here.”
“Bu...but how about the pandas? Where are the pandas?”
“I just said there aren't any pandas here ! Look there are some penguins. Aren't they cute ?”
“Don't wanna ! The pandas ! I wanna see the pandas !”
“I told you, there aren't any here. Pandas are in the zoo !”

For some reason it seems that the boy had misunderstood that there were pandas in the aquarium, and in the end he just went on having his tantrum for the whole time until we left the spot.

Pandas in the aquarium...I wonder why the boy thought that there were pandas in an aquarium ? The two of us found their conversation kind of funny and we always remember that day and have a laugh about it.

When you were a kid, did you experience making such unreasonable demands on and troubling your father or mother like this ?

Gyudon (rice covered with beef and vegetables)

Gyudon (rice covered with beef and vegetables)

In our family everyone likes Gyudon (rice covered with beef and vegetables) . We can make it at home, but its really difficult to get it to taste like the one at a Gyudon specialist shop. So on our day off, we all sometimes get together as a family and go out to eat Gyudon. In the past, the image commonly held of Gyudon shops was that it was a shop where busy male businessmen went, but recently shops which are more inviting to women and people with kids are on the rise. The menu isn't limited to the simple Gyudon either, there's also GyuDon with cheese on top, or Gyudon with grated Daikon (Japanese radish) on top and other strange variations of Gyudon. If you come to Japan or are in Japan, please give this a try .

On the ski slopes near Tokyo

The other day I took the kids to a skiing spot. The place was called 'Saku Ski Garden Parada', which is directly connected to the highway, so that from the Saku Taira highway stop you can go straight onto the ski slopes. On top of which, we had good weather on the day, so we could get there using normal tires and didn't need to change to studless tires.

And despite the fact that it was such a convenient place to get to, there weren't that many people there, so it must have been one of those little-known hidden gems for people living in the Tokyo area to come with their kids.

On the slopes, in the kids area, there were many kids playing with sleds. They were all really absorbed in this, sliding downhill again and again. They completely ignored the words of caution that the worried adults around them were giving and threw themselves into the fun of it all. As for me, I joined the kids in a very un-adultlike fashion, and tried my hand at sledding too...(I paid for it) the next day with muscle pain all over!

But putting that aside, I think its wonderful to be able to play at one thing for hours on end. It was a day on which I really got a lot of good stimulation from the innocent and driven way in which kids play.

Japanese Valentine's Day

As you know, February 14th is Valentine's Day.
What do you do on this day in your country ?

In Japan, ladies give men presents of chocolate and profess their love. However, recently, chocolates exchanged between women with their fellow women which are known as “Tomo Choko” ( literally Friendship Chocolate) , have apparently become the most popular.
Coincidentally, chocolates given to the man or men you really love are known as “Hon Mei Choko” ( literally True Feeling Chocolate). And chocolate you buy for yourself as a reward, is known as “Jibun Choko” ( literally Chocolate for Oneself), and chocolates bought for male co-workers, for the boss, or for people who usually help you out in daily life are known as “Giri Choko” ( literally Duty-bound Chocolates).

There are many other things connected with Valentine's Day, in shops there are many Valentine's goods, and some restaurants and cafes prepare Valentine's Day special menus. It is one of the big events on the Japanese calendar.

In my home, I make chocolate together with my children and give it as a present to my husband. The kids really look forward to the return gifts they get on White Day, so they really work hard at making the chocolate. A lot of secret eating goes as well though !

What do you usually do on Valentine's Day ?

Examination success in Japan

This year again, the entrance examination season has arrived.

School entrance examinations are held from January to February, looking towards the school entrance period which takes place in April in Japan. During this season, various “support goods” go on sale intended for the students,  who, despite the cold, are studying day and night to sit the exams .

There are a wide range of goods, starting with the standard Japanese good luck charms for example,  and spanning to include stationary goods and knick-knacks. But recently, new edible goods stand-out especially.

Making use of puns on words meaning good luck, in an attempt to win the hearts of examination students, there are a lot of sweets out on sale within the stores.

For example :-
The corn snack 'Curl' (pronounced kaaru) made a version called 'Ukaaru' with a play on words on 'Ukaru' which means 'pass the test'.

Kit Kat used the pun on 'kitto' which means 'surely' and created a version with the copy 'Kitto Sakura Saku' which literally means 'The Cherry Blossoms will surely bloom'. 'Sakura Saku' is a metaphor for exam success. [School entrance season also coincides with the cherry blossom season].  And each piece of chocolate contains a message of support for the test takers.

A five-sided mug cup is available (5 sides = Go Kaku ) a play on the word 'Goukaku' which means 'success or pass'.

They are almost all just puns or dull jokes, but sometimes it might be a good idea to relax and eat some of these sweets (taking a break from studying) don't you think ?
