Dieting

I have an eternal problem... it's dieting.
I've bought exercise DVDs, tried walking, cutting out the carbs, I've tried a lot of different things, but I just can't seem to continue any of them for long.
And now I, even with this character, have gone and bought myself another new diet gadget.
Its a balance ball this time.

When I am working on the computer, instead of sitting on a chair, I sit on my balance ball.
I looked it up on the Net and it seems that there are some people who say that its really good for you and there are people who say its not.
Right now, I think its really good – it helps to give you good posture and when you sit down for a long time your bottom doesn't hurt.
I don't know if its effective as a diet method, but I'll keep it up for a while and see.
I am hope that I am in for a pleasant surprise from the change it brings about , but you never know.

Karaoke alone

Can you go to restaurants or karaoke bars by yourself ? I don't mind going to coffee shops or restaurants alone, but I am unwilling to go to places which have an image of many people enjoying themselves, like karaoke bars or amusement parks. That's because at the entrance gate, when I am asked “How many people in your group?” I am embarrassed to answer, “One.”

For people like this, a new type of specialty shop has opened called 'Hitori Karaoke' or 'HitoKara' for short. The customers are all people who have come to sing karaoke by themselves, so the staff never ask, “How many people in your group ?”

The room is about the size of two telephone booths side by side and in it there's a desk, a chair, a small screen, and a very high quality microphone similar to ones used by professional singers. You put on some headphones, and sing along while listening to the music.

You are quite busy searching for the next song while you are singing, so there isn't much time to rest. I went and tried to sing on my own for 1 hour and found myself somehow feeling very tired afterward. I peeped into the other rooms from the corridor and they were almost all full and the singers in there seemed to be enjoying themselves.
But I still felt that I would prefer to go with family or friends.

Oshare Steteco

In Japan from the rainy season and during the summer period, department stores and the like sell certain goods known as “Oshare Steteco” and they are gaining in popularity.

Steteco are a type of underwear that allow for breathability, they come down below the knees, and are worn under trousers. They are an excellent product that can be used all year; worn in summer to help soak up sweat, and in winter for protection against the cold. They are usually worn by middle-aged men, so the standard product's image is white.

However, a few years back 'Oshare Steteco' (oshare means fashionable) came out and they were Steteco made with a high sense of fashion, and they overturned the image that “Steteco are white underwear for middle-aged men”.

The large variations in color and design of these 'Oshare Steteco' makes them really convenient, you can use them as homewear to relax in or even wear them out when, for example, you have to make a quick errand to buy something at the nearby convenience store. Recently there are even some “How to wear Oshare Steteco” seminars being held in some places.

If you're looking to buy a, slightly unusual souvenir from Japan, how about a pair of Oshare Steteco ?

Nagashi Soumen

Yesterday, there was an annual Nagashi Soumen (washed down noodles) event held at a nearby shrine, so I went there with my daughter.

Bamboo poles are cut into half and joined together like a playground slide , and in these Soumen (thin white noodles) is washed down and we eat it, so it is called “Nagashi Soumen”. Since the Soumen is being washed down the poles with water it looks refreshingly cool. It's really fun, like a game, because you have to scoop up the noodles as they come splashing down with chopsticks. Eating , while listening to the excited buzz of children's voices screaming,“I got some !” “I didn't get any!” is also part of the fun.

Do you have some interesting ways to eat food in your country like this Nagashi Soumen way ? Please let me know if you do. You can add comments in Japanese or English below.

The Olympics !

The Olympics !

In a week from now, the Olympics, which take place once every four years, will begin. This time around they are being held in London, England. I just can't wait for them to start !

What events or games are you looking forward to watching ?
I am looking forward to all of the them, but in particular I definitely want to watch the Judo which is Japan's traditional speciality, as well as the gymnastics event, and the sport that I was really into during my school days, volleyball.

Whenever I watch sports on TV, I always try to watch it live. When its live, you don't know the result so its really exciting to watch and it sets the heart racing.
I call out and support the athletes just as if I was actually at the game venue.

I want to watch the games live this time around too, but there is a time difference between Japan and England - night and day are totally reversed.  Therefore I'm resolved to the fact that until the Olympics are over, that I am going to have a lack of sleep everyday.

Some heated battles are about to start during the heat of this year's summer !

Unagi restaurants are in a pinch!

Unagi restaurants are in a pinch!

In Japan, we eat "Unagi" (eels) very often, and there are many Unagi restaurants.
We have a custom of eating Unagi, especially in July.
Unagi is said to be nutritious. It’s very hot in summer, so we eat Unagi to gain energy.

I love “Hitsumabushi”.
“Hitsumabushi” is famous cuisine in Nagoya city, which is similar to “Unagi don(a bowl of eel on rice)”. Unagi is cut into dices and mixed into the cooked rice.
When you eat Unagi with chinese onions, seaweed and wasabi, it tastes very good.

Currently, Unagi restaurants are in a pinch.
Due to a poor catch of Unagi juveniles (glass eels), they cannot be raised in farms.
The price of Unagi is getting higher, too.
There is a fear that the number of Unagi restaurants might decrease.

When I visit my home town, I often go to the Unagi restaurant near my parents' house.
I’m very worried about whether I will be able to eat Unagi this summer!
When you visit Japan or Nagoya, please try “Unagi don” or “Hitsumabushi” while it lasts!
