バレンタインデー Japanese Valentine's Day

2月14日はバレンタインデーですね。

みなさんの国では何をしますか？

日本では、女性が男性にチョコレートをプレゼントし、愛の告白をするという日です。ですが、最近では、女同士でチョコレートを交換する「友チョコ」が一番多いそうです。ちなみに好きな男性へのチョコレートは「本命チョコ」と言います。また、自分へのご褒美として自分から自分へプレゼントする「自分チョコ」や、会社の上司や同僚など、日ごろお世話になっている人への「義理チョコ」などもあります。

バレンタインデーにちなんで、お店ではバレンタイングッズがあったり、レストランやカフェでは、バレンタイン限定メニューがあるところもあります。日本では大きなイベントの一つになっています。

我が家では、子どもたちと一緒に毎年チョコレートを作って主人にプレゼントします。子どもたちは3/14のホワイトデーのお返しをとても楽しみにしているので、一生懸命作ります。つまみ食いも多いですが…。

As you know, February 14th is Valentine's Day.
What do you do on this day in your country ?

In Japan, ladies give men presents of chocolate and profess their love. However, recently, chocolates exchanged between women with their fellow women which are known as “Tomo Choko” ( literally Friendship Chocolate) , have apparently become the most popular.
Coincidentally, chocolates given to the man or men you really love are known as “Hon Mei Choko” ( literally True Feeling Chocolate). And chocolate you buy for yourself as a reward, is known as “Jibun Choko” ( literally Chocolate for Oneself), and chocolates bought for male co-workers, for the boss, or for people who usually help you out in daily life are known as “Giri Choko” ( literally Duty-bound Chocolates).

There are many other things connected with Valentine's Day, in shops there are many Valentine's goods, and some restaurants and cafes prepare Valentine's Day special menus. It is one of the big events on the Japanese calendar.

In my home, I make chocolate together with my children and give it as a present to my husband. The kids really look forward to the return gifts they get on White Day, so they really work hard at making the chocolate. A lot of secret eating goes as well though !

今年も、受験シーズンが到来しました。

日本では４月の新入学に向けて、１～２月に入学試験を行います。寒さにも負けず、日夜がんばって勉強している受験生たちのために、この時期は様々な「応援グッズ」が販売されています。

商品は、定番の「お守り」をはじめ、文房具や小物など多岐にわたりますが、最近特に目立つのは食品です。

縁起のいい語呂合わせで受験生の心をつかもうと、今年もたくさんのお菓子が店頭に並びました。

例えば…

コーンスナック「カール」は、試験に「ウカ～ル【受かる】」、

This year again, the entrance examination season has arrived.

School entrance examinations are held from January to February, looking towards the school entrance period which takes place in April in Japan. During this season, various “support goods” go on sale intended for the students,  who, despite the cold, are studying day and night to sit the exams .

There are a wide range of goods, starting with the standard Japanese good luck charms for example,  and spanning to include stationary goods and knick-knacks. But recently, new edible goods stand-out especially.

Making use of puns on words meaning good luck, in an attempt to win the hearts of examination students, there are a lot of sweets out on sale within the stores.

For example :-
The corn snack 'Curl' (pronounced kaaru) made a version called 'Ukaaru' with a play on words on 'Ukaru' which means 'pass the test'.

Kit Kat used the pun on 'kitto' which means 'surely' and created a version with the copy 'Kitto Sakura Saku' which literally means 'The Cherry Blossoms will surely bloom'. 'Sakura Saku' is a metaphor for exam success. [School entrance season also coincides with the cherry blossom season].  And each piece of chocolate contains a message of support for the test takers.

A five-sided mug cup is available (5 sides = Go Kaku ) a play on the word 'Goukaku' which means 'success or pass'.

They are almost all just puns or dull jokes, but sometimes it might be a good idea to relax and eat some of these sweets (taking a break from studying) don't you think ?

福袋（ふくぶくろ） Lucky bags

お正月の楽しみの一つは、初売りのバーゲンセールではないでしょうか。
元旦からセールをする店もあって、朝からとてもにぎわっています。

バーゲンセールの目玉といえば、福袋でしょう。
福袋とは、いろいろな商品をまとめて入れた袋のことで、それらの合計金額よりずっと安い値段で販売されます。
多くの場合、福袋の中身を見ることはできません。買った人にとっていい商品が入っていれば、その人は「運がいい」ということになります。

最近では、袋の中身が見えるものも増えてきています。中身が見えると、「ハズレ」の袋を買うことは減りますが、それでは楽しみが減ってしまうのではないかなあとも思います。

福袋は数が限定されている場合が多いので、お目当ての福袋を買うために開店前から並ぶ人もいます。

みなさんは福袋があったら、買ってみたいですか？

One of the pleasures of the New Year season are the first bargain sales of the year, don't you think ?There are some stores that start their sales from the first day of the year, and they are bustling from the morning.

And the centerpiece of the bargain sales has to be the 'Fuku Bukuro' or 'lucky bags'. 'Fuku Bukuro' are a variety of goods packaged together and inserted into bags, and they are sold for a cheaper price than the total sum value of all the separate goods included. In many cases, you cannot see the contents of the 'Fuku Bukuro'. It is said that if the 'Fuku Bukuro' contains good products for the buyer, then that person “has good luck”.

Recently, there has been an increase of 'Fuku Bukuro' in which you can see the contents. If you can see the contents, it decreases your chances of buying disappointing or 'fail' Fuku Bukuro', but I think it also takes out some of the fun of it.

The numbers of 'Fuku Bukuro' are often limited, so there are some people who line up from before the shop opens in order to get the bags they are aiming for.

If there were 'Fuku Bukuro' around you, would you go ahead and try to buy one ?

マスク Surgical mask

みなさんの国では、風邪をひいたときにマスクを使いますか？　欧米ではマスクをつけることは一般的ではなく、周りから怪しまれてしまうと聞いています。

日本では薬局やスーパーなどでマスクを売っていて、冬には風邪のため、春には花粉症のためにたくさんの人がマスクをつけています。マスクをつけるのはウィルスを周りに撒き散らさないため、また、花粉やほこりなどを吸い込まないためです。

私はこの冬、まだ風邪をひいていませんが、冬は空気がとても乾燥して毎年喉が痛くなるので、家の中でマスクをして過ごすことにしました。これはとても効果があって、喉の痛みや渇きが治りました。喉の弱い方にはおすすめです。

私はマスクの表側に、ペンで鼻と口を描いています。これでマスク生活がちょっと楽しくなるのでおすすめですが、うっかり、荷物などが来たときにこれをつけたまま玄関に出たり、近所に買い物に行ったりしそうになるので、気をつけましょう。

In your country, do people use a surgical mask when they have a cold? I have heard that wearing a surgical mask is not common in Western countries, and some people wonder why they are worn.

In Japan, pharmacies and supermarkets sell the masks and many people wear them because of the cold in winter and also because of pollen allergies in spring. The aim of wearing the mask in winter is to prevent the spread the cold virus. In spring, the aim is prevent to inhaling pollen and dust.

I have not caught a cold yet this winter, but I decided to wear a surgical mask each day at home because I get sore throats with Japan's very dry winter air. I find the mask to be very effective. I think it is good to wear a mask to protect your throat.

I draw the face on the upper side with a marker pen to make my mask a little more fun. But please be careful not to answer the door with it on, or when shopping.

漫画スケジュール帳 Manga diary

最近は紙のスケジュール帳ではなく、ネットやスマホの手帳機能を使う人も多いようですが、紙派の人にとって１２月といえば次の年のスケジュール帳を買う時期でしょう。

毎年デザインや使い勝手を考えた新しい手帳が出ていますが、「漫画スケジュール帳」というものがあります。

実はこの手帳は「手帳」と名乗りつつも、中身は漫画です。ただ、吹き出し部分が余白になっています。ここに、スケジュールなんかを書き込むのが、正しい使い方。ほかにも日記帳、子供の成長の記録帳として使えます。夢中で一年予定を書き込むうちに、１冊の自分だけの漫画が完成するのです。

スマートフォンの手帳機能も便利ですが、こんなユニークな手帳使ってみてはいかがでしょうか。

Recently, there are a lot of people who use, not paper or book type personal organizer (diaries or monthly planners),  but instead internet-based and smartphone diary or organizer features.
For those who use the book-type or paper-based types, when one thinks of December one considers it to be the time to buy the next year's schedule planner.

Every year, new planners come out all of which take design and usability into consideration but, there are also personal organizers called 'Manga Cho'.

Actually even though this personal organizer uses the name 'organizer', it is actually just a manga (comic book) inside.  However, the speech balloons are left blank. And, used corrrectly, it is in these spaces that you are supposed to fill in things like your schedule and diary entries. You can also use it as a personal diary or as a baby memory journal.
While you are so busy writing in your year's plans, you will end up, without noticing it, completing your very own, individual comic book.

Smarthphone diaries and planners are useful but, why not also try to use this unique type of diary?

この写真は、私の部屋の窓から見える風景です。12月10日の朝、撮影しました。この写真を撮った日は、この冬、一番の寒さでした。私の住んでいるところは、雪がたくさん降るところです。もしかしたら、このブログをみなさんが読んでいるときは、もっと雪が積もっているかもしれません。

ところで、みなさんは、『冬将軍』ということばを知っていますか？

　冬将軍とは「とても寒い冬」という意味です。日本のニュースや天気予報では、とても寒い冬が来たことを「冬将軍の到来」と紹介しています。いつごろからこのように言われているのか分かりませんが、1812年ナポレオンがロシア遠征で雪と寒さから失敗したことが関係して、このことばが生まれたそうです。

　私は寒い冬が嫌いです。だから、冬将軍には来て欲しくないですね。

This photograph is the view from my room's window.

It was taken on the morning of December 10^th. The day I took this photo was the coldest day of winter. The place where I live gets a lot of snowfall. Perhaps when you read this blog, more snow will have piled up.

By the way, have you heard the term 'Fuyu Shougun' before ? 'Fuyu Shougun' means a really cold winter. On the news in Japan, when we get an extremely cold winter, it gets introduced on the weather forecast as a 'Fuyu Shougun'. I am not sure when they began to call it this, but it is related to Napoleon's expedition to Russia that failed due to the snow and cold and gave birth to this word.

Personally I hate winter. I really hope that 'Fuyu Shougun' doesn't come this year.
