The end of year season in Japan has so many events and functions including End of Year parties, Christmas parties, end of year cleaning, etc. so its a really busy time.

One more event of this season is New Year Cards.
New Year's cards are written greetings that include feelings that celebrate the New Year, express thanks for all we were indebted to from last year, and look forward to the New Year together.

As it gets to the end of the year, people choose from their favorite designs and fonts, and either order them from a print shop, or use their computers to be creative and add their own photos or illustrations and make their own cards.
Most of the cards feature pictures or words showing the symbol from the sexagenary cycle ( the animal of the year). This year was the Year of the Ox and next year is going to be the Year of the Tiger.
In English, you say Happy New Year, but on New Year's cards we have a variety of different greetings.

Akemashite Omedetou (congratulations for the start of the New Year)/ Kin Ga Shin Nen( best wishes for the New Year) / Ga Shou ( a Happy New Year! )/ Kyou Ka Shin Nen (Respectful greetings for the New Year)/ Gei Shun ( welcoming spring of the New Year)/ Tsutsunde Shin Shun no Oyorokobi moushiagemasu ( respectfully sending best wishes for the spring of the New Year)/ Hatsu Haru no Oyorokobi wo moushi agemasu (hoping you enjoy the coming new spring) etc

New Year's cards are mailed at the end of the year and are delivered all at once on the first day of the year. Receiving different cards are one of the things that Japanese people look forward to on the first day of the year. We can get to hear about the current status of various friends who we usually cannot meet.

Have you ever received or sent any New Year's cards ?
Why not try to send out some new year's cards this year or maybe next year ?
The receiver will undoubtedly be pleased.

大掃除 The big clean-up

During the second half of December, a major clean-up takes place in homes and offices around Japan. I always think, “I hate to have to do this is when its so cold” - but actually this cleaning is said to be done in order to prepare to welcome the Gods of the New Year or Toshigami sama.
Toshigami sama are the gods to whom people pray to for a rich harvest and the gods that protects the home for that year.

During the Edo period, in Edo castle the event of Susuharai took place on December 13th. Susuharai involved a large scale clean-up to prepare for a festival for the Toshigami sama in the new year. The religious or spiritual meaning behind it was that only after completely cleansing the place, could they welcome the Toshigami sama into it. This apparently spread down to the common people and finally became the large-scale cleaning custom we have today.

The ceremony of Susuharai is still practiced today in shrines and temples, and the events are often covered on the news. However, it is reported that the number of Japanese people that are beginning to think “g I hate to have to do this is when its so cold””is rising. And people who are choosing to do the big clean-up during the warmer weather period of Golden Week when its easier to remove the dirt, are gradually increasing.
Do you have a custom of big clean-ups in your country ?
When is it ?

今年の漢字 The year's Kanji

Every year in December 12th, the year's Kanji is announced.

The year's Kanji is the one Kanji (Chinese character) that expresses that particular year. This event began in 1995. The picture shows Kiyomizu Temple which is where the year's Kanji is announced.

For example, the Kanji for 2006 was 命 (inochi), which means life. In this year, a baby was born to the Imperial family, and there were a lot of incidents that happened which reminded us all of the importance of life. so this Kanji was chosen as the year's Kanji.

Then in 2008, the Kanji chosen for that year was 変 (hen) which means change. There were a lot of changes seen within politics, economics, climate, lifestyles as well in other fields.

So now 2009, the Kanji chosen for this year was 新(shin) which means new. There was a changeover of administration, a new government was inaugurated, and a lot of new policies were begun. There were also a number of new records set by sporting athletes. The new type of influenza became quite prevalent, and there was also the introduction of new drugs as well. Whether good or bad, this was a year where a good deal of new things happened.

Since this event of choosing a year's Kanji began, my family and I have also been choosing our own Kanji of the year every year. It provides us an opportunity to think back over our year. Celebrities also announce their own year's Kanji on TV.

Our family also choses a Kanji for the next year. This becomes our goal for the coming year.

What is your Kanji for this year ?
What is your Kanji for next year ?

JOI大阪サミット JOI's Osaka Summit 2009

Last month on Sunday the 22nd of November, the JOI Osaka "Summit" was held.
The JOI meeting is an opportunity for our manager Ms.Kamioka, the JOI Staff and teachers to gather altogether at the same place and meet face to face. This time was the second such event.
This year 15 people attended. Of these, 6 people were attending their second summit in a row , and for 9 people it was their first time. Members included the manager, Ms. Kamioka, one of the support staff ,Moses, and Steve, our system advisor along with 12 teachers.
We had seen each other's faces many times using our webcams but meeting for the first time, everyone was a little nervous. One would often hear the cry " Wow ! Its really you !"
We first had lunch at a sushi bar near Osaka station, and then changed places and there we drank tea and discussed what was going on in our lives recently and what we have been into recently. Yoga, cycling, baseball, sewing were among some of the subjects that came up as things that people were into.
The scheduled 5 hours passed by like a dream. The time to end the meeting came in a moment. There was no time to say goodbye slowly, we had to rush to get to Kansai airport and get ourselves home. But the feeling of satisfaction, and sense of unity that we all felt that day, was an experience that we could never get from a conference or meeting on the net.

ホテルバイキング Hotel buffet lunches

Recently in Japan, reasonably priced hotel buffet lunches (from about 2500 yen to 3000 yen) which include high quality foods like roast beef and snow queen crab have become well-liked among female customers. But do the hotels make any money with this ?
There is no need to worry. Hotels make good money on their buffet lunches,There are about 20 to 30 kinds of food and the although the expensive food types do stand out, the other foods, mainly salads and things like scrambled eggs do not have high basic costs. Which is why that even though they only charge 3000 yen person, the hotel can still make a profit.
Buffet lunches have only a limited menu which is prepared in advance, so this helps to reduce to the buying costs, and because they in bulk they can get discounts.
Also, because the drinks are self service, it only takes a few members of staff - so labor costs don't come to much.
These hotel buffet lunches, which are aimed for house wives and secretaries, offer a great opportunity for those who want to try some expensive cuisine at reasonable prices.
If you come to Japan, please try one of these buffets at least once.

あなたの好きな日本語 Favorite Japanese words

The other day there was a program on TV, on which various foreign people living in Japan were being interviewed.
The question was “What is one of your favorite Japanese language words? “
Deai (an encounter), tomodachi ( a friend) ,sho ga nai ( it can't be helped), makoto (sincerity, honesty), ichiban (the best , first ),Banzai!, Fuji san ( Mount Fuji), Ninja, sumimasen ( excuse me ), chotto matte (wait a moment), kanpeki (perfect ), kanpai (cheers), mottainai ( its a waste ), oishii ( delicious ), daijoubu ( its alright), shitureishimasu ( excuse me), shinbo suru ( endurnce, patience) , etcetera. A lot of interesting words came up.

There were a lot of different reasons why people chose these as their favorites. Some said they liked the meaning of the word, others said that they liked because there wasn't an equivalent phrase in their own mother language, some even liked the way the word sounded.

When I was in the Philipinnes I really liked one of the words in the local language, Ilocano.
It was “Aiapo”. In Japanese it is similar to the expression “Dokkoisho!” (heave-ho!) or “Ara ma!”( oh dear!).
The sound of the word “Aiapo” was so cute that whenever someone uttered this expression, I remember that it made me feel so happy.

What is one of your favorite expressions in Japanese ?

ママさんバレー Mothers' Volleyball Team

I am a member of a Mothers' Volleyball Team. This is when a group of ladies who enjoy playing volley ball get together and make a Mothers' team and borrow a nearby school gym for practice. Although we call it a Mothers' team, not all the members are married with children. Married ladies over the age of 30 and without children or unmarried ladies over the age of 35 are able to join these Mothers' teams.
There are games held every year during spring and autumn.
In the town in which I live in, there is a big competition in ehich over 40 teams participate in. At the gym, there are many children and fathers who come to support mum's volleyball team.
There are many people who, even after they get old, continue to play volleyball. From this year, there is going to be a national tournament heldwhich is limited to players over 60 years old and players over 70 years old.
I'm not very good at volleyball, but I would like to continue to enjoy to play it for as long as possible.
Do you play any sports ? Comments in English and Japanese below.

インフルエンザ Influenza

 ★English translation

The other day, my kids caught influenza. They are usually lively and energetic, but during this time, they seemed to be in a lot of pain. On top of this, because they contracted it two days before the sports festival, which they had practiced for everyday and had been looking forward to, they couldn't attend their school's sports festival as well. It was a real pity. Fortunately it didn't spread within the family, and 5 days later they were able to go back to their kindergarten.
I was relieved to see them return to their energetic selves.

At the kindergarten that my kids attend, there were some cases where whole classes were temporarily closed. I've heard of other kindergartens where the whole school had been temporarily closed. There are also some stories on the news about influenza sometimes.

Is influenza quite prevalent in your country too ?
