五月病 Go Gatsu Byo – Japan's May sickness

日本ではゴールデンウィークも終わり、また忙しい毎日が戻ってきました。そんな中、5月病になる人が続々と出てきています。みなさんは5月病を知っていますか？

5月病とは4月に新しい環境で生活を始めた新入生や新社会人が、ゴールデンウィークが終わったころから、何となく気分が落ち込んだり、やる気がなくなったりすることです。ゴールデンウィークのような長い休みの後や、環境が急に変わった人に多く現れます。

4月は新しい環境に慣れることで一生懸命ですが、1か月たって少しずつ慣れてくると疲れがストレスとして現れてきます。また、抱いていた理想と現実のギャップに失望してしまう人もいるそうです。

In Japan, Golden Week is over now and once again the hustle and bustle of everyday life is back. In this situation, people suffering from Go Gatsu Byou appear one after another. Do you know what Go Gatsu Byou is ?

Go Gatsu Byou (or May sickness) is the feeling of somewhat depression and lack of motivation that confounds many freshmen or first year students at schools and new recruits at companies who had began life in a new environment at the beginning of April. It often appears after a long holiday like Golden Week and after environments have been changed suddenly.

During the month of April, people try their best to get used to their new environments, but after a month goes by people gradually start to get used to things, and their fatigue takes the form of stress. And there are also people find themselves disappointed with the gap between their cherished ideals and their present reality.

And what kind of people are most susceptible to this condition ? You perfectionists, precise people and serious-minded people beware ! What methods do you use to relieve stress ? Please try to find your own ways to reduce your daily stress levels in order to avoid getting Go Gatsu Byou.

こたつ Kotatsu – Japanese-style heating

だんだん寒くなってきましたね。今年は節電の冬。そんな中、大活躍するのが「こたつ」です。みなさんは、こたつを知っていますか？

こたつは日本の冬には欠かせない暖房器具です。こたつ布団の中に足を入れて、体を温めます。温まりながら一家団欒ができるのがこたつのいいところです。こたつで温まりながら、みかんを食べるという光景は日本の冬の風物詩になっています。今年は節電のため、様々な種類のこたつが売り出されています。一人用のこたつ、勉強机に椅子付きのこたつ、布団がないこたつ…。また、15分人がいないとセンサーが反応して、自動的に電源が切れるこたつもあるようです。

みなさんは、どんなこたつがあったらいいと思いますか？そして、こたつで何をして過ごしたいですか。こたつで寝ると、あまりの温かさにこたつから出られなくなってしまうので気を付けてくださいね！

It's gradually gotten colder, hasn't it. This year's winter is a time to conserve electricity. And for this, the 'Kotatsu' will play a large part. Do you know what a 'Kotatsu' is ?

A Kotatsu is an essential home heater for the Japanese winter. You put your legs under the Kotatsu futon or duvet, and thus heat up your body. The good point of the 'Kotatsu' is that the family can get together while getting warm. The scene of a family sitting around the 'Kotatsu' having a meal is one that comes to mind when one thinks of winter. Because of this year's conservation drive, there are a various types of 'Kotatsu' out on sale . 'Kotatsu' for individual use, 'Kotatsu' with a study desk and chair, 'Kotatsu' that do not need a 'futon' … and so on. And there is also a 'Kotatsu' which, when no one has been inside for more than 15 minutes, has a sensor that reacts and it automatically switches off.

Do you have any idea of what kind of 'Kotatsu would be nice to have ? And what would you like to spend time doing in a 'Kotatsu' ? But be careful, 'Kotatsu' are really warm so it easy to fall asleep in them.

七夕祭り Tanabata star festival

7月7日は七夕です。七夕の伝説を知っていますか？

働き者の織姫＜ベガ＞と彦星＜アルタイル＞は一緒にいると楽しくて、仕事をしなくなってしまいました。そして、天の川によって離れ離れにされてしまいました。7月7日は、引き離された織姫と彦星が1年に1度会える日です。

七夕には笹の枝に飾りつけをして、二人の再会を祝います。短冊に願い事を書いて、ぶらさげると願いが叶うと言われています。私が育った、宮城県仙台市では有名な七夕祭りがあります。毎年多くの人たちで、にぎわいます。商店街の人たちが心をこめて作った七夕飾りはまさに芸術です。私が学生のころは、「仙台七夕を見ると、受験に失敗する」というジンクスがありました。本当かどうかはさておき、みなさんもぜひ仙台七夕を見にきませんか？

The 7^th of July is Tanabata star festival . Do you know the legend of Tanabata ?

The hardworking weaver named Orihime (star of Vega ) and her lover Hikoboshi (star of Altair) enjoyed the time they spent together so much that they stop working altogether. So they were separated by the Milky Way ( Ama no Gawa . On July 7^th for this one day in a year, they were allowed to meet.

On this day it is the custom to hang decorations from the branches of bamboo trees to celebrate the reunion of the couple. If you write your wishes on strips of paper and hang them up, they apparently your wishes can come true. In Sendai city in Miyagi Prefecture, where I was raised, there is a famous Tanabata festival held. Every year it is bustling full of people. The Tanabata decorations made by the local shopping district traders are truly a work of art.

In my student days, there was a jinx that people often told about, that “if you go to see the Tanabata festival (during the exam period) you will fail your exams” ! But setting aside whether this is true or not, why don't you go over and see the Tanabata festival ?
