Esclators in Japan

English translation

Even in the same country of Japan, there are different customs depending on the different areas.
One example of this is how to ride on escalators.

In Tokyo and Nagoya, in order to let people in a hurry walk up, most people stand on the left.
But in Osaka, people generally stand on the right.

So exactley which way is the right one ?
The answer is that neither of them is correct. Actually, you are not allowed to walk on escalators.

But in urban areas, where there are a lot of busy people, this type of custom has become a general norm.

By the way, its been 6 years since I came to live in Hiroshima, and I have never yet witnessed an instance in which people stand cleanly on one side or another of the escalator like they do in Tokyo or Osaka.

What is it like in the place where you live ?
