「〇〇さん」 Polite prefixes and suffixes

★English translation

I'm originally from Yamaguchi prefecture, which is the most western prefecture on the island of Honshu, so while living here in Kyoto I often find myself surprised by one thing. It's that people here add the suffix 'san' to lots of things.

'San' is usually used as an honorific title to people's names (edit. kind of like Mr. or Ms.)so we use it in such cases as Tanaka san (Mr. Tanaka) or Yamada san (Ms. Yamada), but here in Kyoto (or more specifically in the Kansai area), they add the suffix san to things other than people.

At the front of the word, they also add a prefix of 'O' which indicates respect or politeness. Therefore you have situations where the word for potato (imo) becomes O Imo San (which literally translates to something like 'Honorable Mr. Potato' !!), the word for bean (mame) becomes O Mame San (respected Madam Bean!!).

In the case of shrines and temples, they don't use the prefix 'O' but, the people in this area often add the suffix 'san'. So Yasaka Shrine becomes Yasaka san and Kiyomizu temple is known locally as Kiyomizu san.

Some people even say 'Ohayo san' to mean good morning (usually simply ohayo in the rest of Japan).

I think this greeting has a gentle ring to it though, and I think it's really nice, but the picture below shows this habit of being polite being taken a little too far in my opinion. This is a sign board I found in my neighborhood. What do you think?
