宿坊 A stay at a Japanese temple

大きい寺には、よく「宿坊」という宿泊施設があります。この宿坊に泊まる旅が、今、人気を集めています。

「寺の庭をじっくり眺めたい。本物の精進料理を食べてみたい。住職の説教を聞きたい。座禅も組んでみたい、、、。」そんな思いを胸に、一人旅の女性や若いカップル、外国人、熟年夫婦などが、宿坊に泊まりに来ます。

座禅はもちろん、写経ができる寺、お坊さんシェフが精進料理を教えてくれる寺、お経に節をつけて読む「声明」を行う寺。サービスも様々です。

私が「宿坊」に泊まるとしたら、こんなイメージ。
　・　やっぱり一人旅
　・　泊まるお寺については勉強して行かなくちゃ。
　・　空いている時期に行って、お坊さんと話がしてみたい。
　・　ちょっとなら、座禅も組んでみたい。
　こんな怠け者でも泊めてくれるかな。

大（おお）きい寺（てら）には、よく「宿坊（しゅくぼう）」という宿泊（しゅくはく）施設（しせつ）があります。この宿坊（しゅくぼう）に泊（と）まる旅（たび）が、今（いま）、人気（にんき）を集（あつ）めています。

　In large temples, there are facilities where one can stay which are called "Shukubo". Travel tours in which you can stay in these "Shukubo" are gaining popularity of late.

Old couples, young couples, foreigners, ladies traveling alone, people who have held the deep hopes that "I want to take my time to view the Japanese gardens. I want to eat real Sho Jin Ryouri (Buddhist monk vegetarian cuisine). I want to listen to a sermon by a chief priest. I want to try meditation in the lotus position..." these people are among those who come to stay in the Shukuｂo.

There are temples where one can try Zen meditation of course as well make hand-written copies of Sutras, and temples where chef monks come to teach travellers how to cook Sho Jin Ryouri and where they read out Sutras out loud in tunes which are known as Sho Myo. There are various services on offer.

I have an image of what I want if I was to stay at a Shukubo.
 Of course I would be travelling alone
I would have to study up about the temple I was planning to stay at before going.
I would want to go during a season when its empty, because I'd like to talk to the chief priest.
I'd like to try some Zen meditation.
I wonder if they'd let someone as lazy as I am stay over.

世界コスプレサミット（World Cosplay Summit、WCS）in 名古屋

　みなさんは「世界コスプレサミット」をご存じですか。アニメやゲームのキャラクターになりきったコスプレイヤーが、世界一を競う大会です。2003年に始まり、今年で９回目になります。

名古屋のテレビ局が、コスプレを楽しむ海外の漫画・アニメファンを日本へ招待したのがきっかけでした。「好き」という気持ちを視覚的にわかりやすく表現したコスプレは、世界の漫画・アニメファンの共感を呼びました。参加する国も毎年増え、今年は17か国になりました。優勝はブラジル代表です。衣装もさることながら、舞台での演技も素晴らしいものでした。

　コスプレといえば、日本を代表するサブカルチャーですが、上記テレビ局の他、外務省・名古屋市なども主催者になっています。

　夏、名古屋へいらっしゃる方は、日程をぜひコスプレサミットに合わせてみてください。いつもと違う旅行が楽しめると思います。

　みなさんは「世界（せかい）コスプレサミット」をご存（ぞん）じですか。アニメやゲームのキャラクターになりきったコスプレイヤーが、世界一（せかいいち）を競（きそ）う大会（たいかい）です。2003年（ねん）に始（はじ）まり、今年（ことし）で９回目（きゅうかいめ）になります。

The Nagoya World Cosplay Summit

Do you know about the World Cosplay Summit ? It is a contest where “Cosplayers” dressed as characters from the world of Anime and games compete to be the best in the world. Starting in 2003, this year marks the 9^th such event.

The initial impetus for the event came about when a Nagoya-based TV station invited some Manga and Anime fans, who enjoyed Cosplay, to Japan. The easily understood manner in which the Cosplay visually expresses the feeling of enthusiastic liking, resonated with Manga and Anime fans around the world. The number of countries participating increases each year, this year there were 17 countries represented. The winner was the representative from Brazil. It almost goes without saying, but the stage performances were as wonderful as the costumes themselves.

Since Cosplay has become a sub-culture that represents Japan, along with the above TV station, Nagoya city and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have also become organizers of the event.

If you are planning to visit Nagoya, please try to schedule your trip to coincide with the World Cosplay Summit. I think you will be able to enjoy a trip that is different from the norm.

ばら寿司（ずし）／散鮨（ばらずし） Special sushi from Okayama

　 
　わたしの故郷、岡山では、お祭りや子どもの誕生日などに「ばら寿司」を作ります。寿司飯の中に野菜や魚の酢漬けを混ぜ込み、上に金糸卵、緑の野菜、刺身などを飾ったお寿司です。

江戸時代、岡山の藩主「池田光政」は質素倹約を勧め、「食事は一汁一菜」という命令を出しました。そこで、人々は魚や野菜をたくさん寿司飯に混ぜ込み、「一菜だ」と言いました。これが『ばら寿司』の由来です。庶民の知恵が生んだ倹約の時代の豪華料理です。

ばら寿司は、親せきや友人の集まりなどにもよく作られます。お祝いのときはご近所にお裾分けする習慣もあります。「ばら寿司」は「祭り寿司」ともいい、新幹線の中や駅でも買うことができます。

In my hometown, Okayama, we make Bara Zushi for festival days and children's birthdays. Bara Zushi is a type of sushi which is made by mixing vegetables and fish soused with vinegar into cooked rice seasoned with vinegar (sushi rice) with thinly sliced omelets, green vegetables and sashimi sprinkled on top.

During the Edo period, the medieval lord of Okayama, Mitsumasa Ikeda in an attempt to promote a plain and economical lifestyle, ordered that meals should consist of one soup and one dish. So the people took a lot of fish and vegetables and mixed it with sushi rice and claimed that it was one dish. This is the origin of Bara Zushi. It was a luxurious meal made by the wits of the masses during a time of plain, economic lifestyles.

When relatives and friends get together, we often make Bara Zushi. There is also a culture of making Bara Zushi as a gift for one's neighbors whenever they have something to celebrate. Bara Zushi is also known as Matsuri Zushi, and you can find it sold at stations on the Shinkansen line.

みなさんは、猫と話すことができますか。犬と話すことができますか。私はどちらもできませんが、冷蔵庫と話すことができます。

正確には、「冷蔵庫と相談する」。「どうしたら買い物に行かずに、そのときある食材だけでおいしい夕飯が作れるか」を、冷蔵庫と話し合うのです。週末に買い物をすると、次の金曜日は必ず「ご相談」になります。私はこの作業がとても好きです。

少ない食材をどう組み合わせるか。どれとどれが相性がいいか。これは普通蒸して食べるけれども、ニンニクで炒めたらどうだろう。食べてくれる家族の顔を思い浮かべながら、頭をフル回転させます。「ああ、お母さんがまた変な料理を作ったあ。」という嘆きの声が「おいしい！定番に加えたら？」という言葉に変わったとき、私は心の中でガッツポーズをとります。

みなさんは、冷蔵庫と相談することがありますか。おもしろいアイデア料理があったら、ぜひ教えてください。

Can you talk to cats ? Can you talk to dogs ? I cannot talk to either, but I can talk to refrigerators .

To be exact, I can 'consult with refrigerators'. If I'm wondering whether I can make a delicious dinner with the only the ingredients I have here, and without having to go out shopping ? - I talk it over with my refrigerator .

If I am going to go shopping over the weekend, I schedule 'a consultation' with my refrigerator on the Friday without fail. And I love doing this work.

What can I make with limited ingredients ?

Which ingredients match with which ?

This is usually eaten steamed, but if I fried it with garlic what would it be like ?

When I try to imagine my family's faces as they sit down to eat, it makes my head spin

But when the lament “Oh no ! Mum made something strange again !” turns into, “This is delicious ! You should add this to your repertoire !” I strike a victory pose in my mind .

借景 Borrowed scenery

少し前、「正伝寺」という禅宗のお寺を訪ねました。京都の町の北、舟山の麓にあります。
本堂と庫裏だけの小さなお寺ですが、鎌倉時代から700年以上も続く由緒あるお寺です。 人影のない本堂で一人縁側に座って、ゆっくりと庭を眺めました。
白砂と、サツキを７：５：３の組み合わせで置いた枯山水の庭です（写真）。視線をあげると木立が目に入ります。その奥に比叡山が見えます。周りの景色も霊峰もこの庭の一部になっているのです。「景色を借りる」ことから「借景」といいます。

ときどき小鳥の声が聞こえました。とても静かでした。 日が暮れるまでここにいたい、帰りたくないと思ったほどでした。

みなさんは、水のない庭や借景について、聞いたことがありますか。

A little while ago I visited a Zen temple called Sho Den Ji. It is located at the foot of Mt. Funayama, north of Kyoto.

It is a small temple which consists only of a main building and an annex for the priest's lodging, but it is an historic temple which dates back more than 700 years to the Kamakura era. The temple was quite deserted, so I was able to sit down on my own on the veranda of the main building and gaze leisurely at thegarden.

It was a dry landscape garden of white sand with a 7:5:3 combination of Azalea ( see photo ) .When I raised my eyes, a thicket of trees came into view. And beyond that, Mt. Hieizan could be seen. The surrounding landscape and the sacred mountain all became a part of this garden. (In Japanese landscaping), the art of borrowing from the landscape is known as Shakkei or borrowed scenery.

Every once in while, I could hear the sound of bird song. It was very quiet. I didn't feel like going home, so much so that I stayed there until the day began to change to dusk.
