A tip

As autumn begins in Japan, there are various sports days held here and there. Undo Kai or sports days are events where everyone splits into teams and they have races or play games to decide the victor.
They are very fun events, but for kids who are not good at sports, they can be quite depressing as well .

Recently, there are some tips on how to run faster.
For example, run with a golf ball gripped in your hand, or run while biting on some tissue or a piece of cloth stuffed with your back teeth, among other things.
I don't know if these tips really work, but for kids who run slowly, this is surely good news.
If I had known this information when I was a kid, I would have probably tried it too.

Do you know any tips on how to run fast ?
Comments in English or Japanese below please .

Haunted House

Have you ever seen a ghost ?

I have never seen a real ghost but, I have seen some fake ghosts in haunted houses a number of times.

Obake Yashiki (or haunted houses) are facilities that are aimed at giving an experience of pseudo-fear for pleasure. They can be found at amusement parks but we also make hand-made ones at culture festivals at school too.

Last month at my son's kindergarten I went into a hand-made haunted house. As is standard, there was a ghost dressed in a kimono and a mummy inside there. It was gloomy inside, and really quiet – it was quite scary - that chilly feeling is almost unbearable.

You really have to try a haunted house in summer! If you get a chance, please try out a Japanese haunted house.

A nostalgic song

Greetings during the lingering days of summer

Have you ever heard the word 'Zansho Mimai' (it means greetings for the last days of summer) ?
Here in Japan, even though Risshu or the first day of Autumn has already passed ( it fell on August 7th this year), the hot days are still continuing. So in this season, we send letters and cards with greetings like, "Autumn is getting closer but its still hot, isn't it ? or How are you holding up ? Please take good care of your health." These greetings are called Zansho Mimai.

Actually, Sho Chuu Mimai (summer greeting cards) are more typical. Sho Chuu Mimai greetings are usually sent from the period between the end of rainy season ( at the end of July) to the day before Risshu. However, the rainy season this year ended late and there were some heavy rains in various areas around the country. So while we were still waiting for the opportunity to send off our Sho Chuu Mimai, Risshu came and went.
So I too sent some Zansho Mimai to my friends a few days ago.

When we talk about the custom of sending seasonal greetings in Japan, New Years cards or Nenga Jo are well known, but we also have customs like this in summer. If you have a chance, please try to send some of your Japanese friends one of these greetings. I bet your friends will be pleasantly surprised.

The Thousand-Armed Goddess of Mercy

It had been a while, but last month I went to Kyoto.
There are a lot of famous temples and shrines in Kyoto, and one of these is a temple called San Juu San Gendo - which I visited .
San Juu San Gendo is near to Kyoto station, and the best point to see is inside the temple hall. Jam-packed tightly together and lined up inside the hall are statues of the Thousand-Armed Goddess of Mercy ( Sen Juu Kanon).
The main statue of a sitting Thousand-Armed Goddess of Mercy is a national treasure and sits in the center of the room and on both her left side and her right side, in orderly lines are 500 standing statues of her image.
Photographs are forbidden inside the hall, so I couldn't take a picture but this sight is truly extraordinary.

And although the faces of the all the Sen Juu Kanon look the same, they were all made by different sculptors , and when you look carefully, you can see that they are each different .
And it is also said that you can see among them, the face of someone that you want to meet.

If you ever get a chance, please try and visit this place.

In the city of Sapporo where I live, it is customary every year to have a fireworks festival at the end of July.
There is large river known as Toyohira Gawa in Sapporo and the fireworks are launched from its banks.

Lots of people walk to the river banks to watch with their lovers or families.
The river banks are diked into the shape of steps and we can sit and and watch from there.
Young girls wear yukata and there are lots of fashionable people .

Fortunately, our house is near the river banks so take some mats, beer and beer snacks and head out before it gets dark.
Then we find a free space and lay out the mats and sit down to watch the fireworks while drinking our beer. The place from where they launch the fireworks is really close, so they look really large and have an amazing impact.
When its over, people are so moved that they just start clapping spontaneously.

The summers are really short in Sapporo, so for this one hour on this evening people really enjoy the summer.
How do you enjoy your summer ?

Car communication

Do you ever want to communicate a message to a driver in another car when you are driving ?  For example whendriver lets you into a line of cars as you turn onto a main road from a side road and you want to say thank you .

In Japan, when communicating from car to car, there are some special signals.
“Thanks for letting me in” = Flash your hazard lights twice.
“The light has turned green” = Sound your horn once 'Beep !'
“Go ahead (to an oncoming car) “ = Switch your passing lights on and off once
“Thank you for letting me go ahead” = Lightly bow, wave your hand slightly or hit your horn lightly (Just once – Beep!)
If you are on the highway and the oncoming car suddenly suddenly flashes their passing lights at you, its to signal that there is a police speed trap ahead.( But this is a secret !)

Of course these signals aren't taught in driving school . You just get to learn them bit by bit while you are driving. Just as with language, there are some small differences according to area.

In your country, what kind of signs do cars use to communicate ?

Summer holidays are going to start soon in Japan.
In your country, what do kids do during their vacations ?
In Japan, kids have to do lots of homework.

The homework is not just studying, First of all you have to write a diary. Even though this is a really easy task, it is a really difficult homework.
It is easy enough to write a diarybut writing something everyday in the diary for 40 days is really tough. There are some kids who try to write 40 days worth ( of diary entries ) on the last day of the holidays.

Other tasks are, to draw pictures, paint landscapes, read books and give your impression of them in pictures.
Kids also sometimes make handicrafts, make a savings box, or make toys.
When you are making them you have to be imaginative. . Parents usually help. But for parents who hate handicraft, it is really terrible .
And parents who are good at handicraft making become their kids' heroes.

That isn't all either, there is still other homework to do. Japanese kids seem to be very busy don't they ?

In your country, what kind of homework do kids get during the vacations ? Is it the same as in Japan ?

A society based on mutual trust

  ★English translation

It has been said the Japanese society is one that is built on the belief that human nature is fundamentally good or a society based on mutual trust.
It has been 60 years since the end of the war, and of course one can see that some of the features of this society have changed, but as far as I can see, within my own my family ; my wife who has been a full-time home-maker seems to have changed a great deal, whereas I, a person who has spent 40 years working within a company and thus supposedly has been within a society based on contracts all this time, I don't feel I have changed at all .
The differences between us show up the most in our changing attitudes towards doctors. When I go to see a doctor, I usually listen to what he says obediently ( agree ' Yes, yes' ), thank him and go home.My wife on the other hand, collects plenty of data, itemizes her symptoms in detail and then when she gets to the hospital, she asks the doctor various questions. And she further questions the doctor's answers.
The other day, I was working around the garden, I felt a cramping pain in my chest muscles and couldn't move for about 10 minutes. So the next day I went to the hospital.
The doctor at the university hospital took a look at my X-ray photo, and asked me how long I had been having these symptoms, “They started a few years ago”, I answered.
“Well the photo looks clear, I think it must have been a little muscle pain.” said the doctor, “If the symptoms have been ongoing for several years, you can rest assured that it is not life-threatening.” I felt glad and went home.
When my wife heard my story, she said, “ So, you went, but you didn't solve a thing.”
“Oh I see,” I thought, “So that's how she feels.”
Well, I guess I'm just a typical Japanese man.
