ビーチコーミング Beachcombing

皆さんはビーチコーミングを知っていますか？

ビーチコーミングとは海岸の漂着物を拾い集める趣味のことです。

海岸などを歩きまわり、興味のあるものをコレクションしたり、どこからきたのかを調べたり、

加工して雑貨をつくったり、人によって様々なやり方があります。

貝殻やサンゴはもちろん、流木、海を転がっているうちに形の変わってしまった石や

ガラスのかけら、どこの国から流れてきたのかわからない謎のものなど海岸にはお宝がいっぱいです。

興味あるものを拾い集めるだけではなく、海岸をきれいにするために、ゴミを拾いながら行うことで、

清掃イベントとして取り組んでいる地域もあります。

これから９月。日本は台風の季節です。台風が去ったあと、海岸にいってみると。。。

色々なものが落ちていますよ。あなただけのお宝を探してみませんか。

Beachcombing

Do you know what beachcombing is ?

Beachcombing is the hobby of picking up and collecting objects that have washed in with the tide. It involves walking along the shore, making a collection of any things of interest that are found, researching where they originally came from, making decorations or objects with them : there are various ways of doing it, depending on the person. There are shells and coral to be found of course , as well as driftwood and pieces of glass or rock that have taken on strange shapes as they rolled around in the oceans ; there are a host of treasures to be found on the beachline with mysterious countries of origin.

Its not only about picking up interesting objects, it also involves cleaning up the beaches by picking up garbage as well ; in some local areas there are cleaning events tied in with beachcombing.

In September in Japan, this is the season of typhoons. When you take a look at the beaches after a typhoon has gone past... there are various objects to be found lying around. How about going and looking for your very own piece of treasure ?

田んぼ道 A rice field road

子供のころ、私の遊び場は田んぼ道でした。

私の町は、大昔、湖だったところを水をひき、田んぼに開拓した町です。

町のほとんどが田んぼです。

その間を通る田んぼ道で、小さな花や四つ葉のクローバーを見つけたり、小さな動物をさがして遊んでいました。

今でもよくこの田んぼ道を散歩します。

そして、花や四つ葉のクローバーを見つけ、隠れている蛙や、ばったを探す、、、

子供のころと同じですね。

時間がゆっくり流れ、とてもリフレッシュできます。

みなさんの周りに舗装されていない道はありますか。

コンクリートより涼しく感じますよね。

日本はまだまだ暑いですが、田んぼは秋の色になりました。

緑色から黄金色に変わり、稲刈りの季節です。

子供（こども）のころ、私（わたし）の遊（あそ）び場（ば）は田（た）んぼ道（みち）でした。

When I was a child, my playground was the road running between the rice fields (tanbo michi).

A long time ago, a place that was once a lake was a drained and in its place, a rice field was cultivated ; this is my town.

The whole town is almost completely all rice fields now.

The road that runs between these rice fields is the 「tanbo michi」 where I would play at finding small flowers, four leaf clovers and small animals.

I still often take walks along this road.

And I find flowers, four leaf clovers and look for hidden frogs and grasshoppers...

Just like when I was a child.

Time passes slowly here and I can feel rejuvenated.

Its still hot here in Japan, but the rice fields have changed to their autumn colors.

They have changed from green to gold-colored; its the reaping season now.

私の永遠の課題、それはダイエットです。

DVDを買って運動したり、ウォーキングをしたり、炭水化物を抜いてみたり、いろいろやってみるのですが、どれも長続きしません。

そんな私がまた新しいものに手を出しました。

バランスボールです。

パソコンで仕事をしている間、椅子のかわりにバランスボールに座るのです。

インターネットで調べてみると、いいと言う人もいれば、良くないという人もいました。

いまのところ私がいいと思うのは、姿勢が良くなることと、長い時間座ってもお尻が痛くないことです。

ダイエットに効果があるかどうかはまだわかりませんが、しばらく使ってみます。

驚くような変化があるといいのですが、さて、どうでしょう。

I have an eternal problem... it's dieting.

I've bought exercise DVDs, tried walking, cutting out the carbs, I've tried a lot of different things, but I just can't seem to continue any of them for long.

And now I, even with this character, have gone and bought myself another new diet gadget.

Its a balance ball this time.

When I am working on the computer, instead of sitting on a chair, I sit on my balance ball.

I looked it up on the Net and it seems that there are some people who say that its really good for you and there are people who say its not.

Right now, I think its really good – it helps to give you good posture and when you sit down for a long time your bottom doesn't hurt.

I don't know if its effective as a diet method, but I'll keep it up for a while and see.

I am hope that I am in for a pleasant surprise from the change it brings about , but you never know.

ひとりカラオケ Karaoke alone

　みなさんは一人でレストランに入ったり、カラオケに行ったりすることができますか。私はレストランや喫茶店は一人でも平気ですが、遊園地やカラオケなど大勢で楽しむイメージがある場所では、少し抵抗を感じてしまいます。入り口で「何名様ですか」と質問されて、「一人です」と答えるのが恥ずかしいからです。

　そんな人のために「ひとりカラオケ（ひとカラ）」の専門店がオープンしました。お客さんはもちろん一人で歌いに来た人ばかり、店員も決して「何名様ですか」と聞くことはありません。

電話ボックスを横に２つ並べたくらいの小さな部屋の中に、机と椅子と小さなスクリーン、そしてプロが使うような立派なマイクが置いてあります。そこでヘッドホンをして、音楽を聞きながら歌います。自分が歌っている間に、次の曲を選ばなければならないので忙しく、休む暇もありません。

 ひとりで1時間歌ってみましたが、なんだかとても疲れてしまいました。廊下からほかの部屋をちょっとのぞいてみると、ほとんど満室で、それぞれ楽しそうに歌っていました。やっぱり私は友達や家族と一緒に来たいなあ・・・

Can you go to restaurants or karaoke bars by yourself ? I don't mind going to coffee shops or restaurants alone, but I am unwilling to go to places which have an image of many people enjoying themselves, like karaoke bars or amusement parks. That's because at the entrance gate, when I am asked “How many people in your group?” I am embarrassed to answer, “One.”

For people like this, a new type of specialty shop has opened called 'Hitori Karaoke' or 'HitoKara' for short. The customers are all people who have come to sing karaoke by themselves, so the staff never ask, “How many people in your group ?”

The room is about the size of two telephone booths side by side and in it there's a desk, a chair, a small screen, and a very high quality microphone similar to ones used by professional singers. You put on some headphones, and sing along while listening to the music.

You are quite busy searching for the next song while you are singing, so there isn't much time to rest. I went and tried to sing on my own for 1 hour and found myself somehow feeling very tired afterward. I peeped into the other rooms from the corridor and they were almost all full and the singers in there seemed to be enjoying themselves.

But I still felt that I would prefer to go with family or friends.

おしゃれステテコ Oshare Steteco

日本では梅雨頃から夏にかけて、デパートなどで「おしゃれステテコ」というものが売られ、人気を集めています。

「ステテコ」とは、膝下ぐらいの丈の、ズボンの下に着る通気性のよい下着のことで、夏は汗を吸い取るため、冬は防寒のためと、一年中活躍する優れものです。

主に中高年の男性がはくもので、色は白が定番でした。

ところが、数年前から「おしゃれステテコ」といいうファッション性の高い「ステテコ」が

Steteco are a type of underwear that allow for breathability, they come down below the knees, and are worn under trousers. They are an excellent product that can be used all year; worn in summer to help soak up sweat, and in winter for protection against the cold. 流しそうめん Nagashi Soumen

昨日、近くの神社で夏恒例の『流しそうめん』があったので、娘といっしょに行ってきました。

竹を半分に割ったものをすべり台のようにつないで、そこにそうめんを流して食べるから『流しそうめん』なのですが、そうめんが水に乗って流れてくるのでとても涼しげですし、流れてくるそうめんを箸ですくうのがゲームのようでとてもおもしろいです。「つかめた！つかめない！」と子どもたちとわいわい言いながら食べるのも楽しいです。

みなさんの国にも、『流しそうめん』のようなおもしろい食べ方がありますか。あれば、ぜひ教えてくださいね。

Yesterday, there was an annual Nagashi Soumen (washed down noodles) event held at a nearby shrine, so I went there with my daughter.

Bamboo poles are cut into half and joined together like a playground slide , and in these Soumen (thin white noodles) is washed down and we eat it, so it is called “Nagashi Soumen”. Since the Soumen is being washed down the poles with water it looks refreshingly cool. It's really fun, like a game, because you have to scoop up the noodles as they come splashing down with chopsticks. Eating , while listening to the excited buzz of children's voices screaming,“I got some !” “I didn't get any!” is also part of the fun.
